EDITOR’S LETTER
grace gatto
Every year, seemingly overnight, our long dog-days of summer turn
into the brisk autumn season. The shift takes me by surprise each
time but you can feel the distinct readiness for a quieter pace. While
summer brings the buzz of adventure, autumn and winter make
way for the necessary time of reflection and solitude.
Whether you are planning snowy winter mountaintop I dos,
looking for the perfect way of incorporating those dreamy warm
autumn tones, or wishing for an intimate elopement with just you
and your fiancé, this magazine was intentionally curated with this
idea to treasure and showcase how your love can be celebrated
during this special and fleeting time in the Rockies.
congrats!

As we close out this year that has asked so much of us, my invitation
would be to intentionally use this season to revel in the small
moments of joy that have found their way through the cracks of
chaos. Us ladies at RMB are so honored to be walking this wedding
planning journey with you and hope that the pages moving forward
remind you of the lighthearted bliss of your partnership and the
true honoring that deserves!

Ann & Zack / Aspen
This adventurous couple met at a motocross track in Jordan, Minnesota.
The two both grew up racing and quickly found they had more in common.
To propose Zack and Ann found themselves both reaching out to their
photographer, Becca, but for different reasons. For Ann, she and Zack
had been talking about getting photos because he races on the circuit and
didn’t have any professional photos to share, while Zach had reached out to
plan a surprise proposal! The couple love the mountains and happened to be
in Snowmass for an X Games qualifier. They took the lift all the way up
and found a beautiful spot in the trees where a very surprised Ann turned to
see Zach down on one knee!

Alyssa & Ryan / Fairplay
Alyssa and Ryan met in college at the Air Force Academy. Alyssa was dancing
at a football game and they met gazes. A few months later they reconnected and
things just felt natural and comfortable. They were both hooked! To propose, Ryan
planned a weekend trip to “their city,” Dallas, Texas to visit a few of their best friends.
Meanwhile, he also arranged for both of their families to fly into Dallas. Under the
guise of getting a good view of the cityscape, Ryan suggested they venture to the
top of the W Hotel with our friends. It was there, above the clouds and in front of
the whole city, that he asked Alyssa to marry him. She had so much to say that she
actually just stared at him and didn’t say anything at all! When she finally got out a
“yes!” She turned around to see their best friends, siblings, and parents onlooking.
They celebrated by going out on the town for dinner and drinks and spent the night
reminiscing and becoming closer as a family.

Renee & Jake / Denver
Jake & Renee met at a coffee shop, Coffee at The Point, in the Five Points
neighborhood. Jake had just started working there and Renee was his trainer.
He kept dropping hints, trying to get her to notice he liked her, but she was all
about the job. Eventually, he succeeded and they went on their first date.
They have been inseparable since. Jake knew he wanted to spend the rest of
his life with Renee and couldn’t wait to get things started. He proposed in the
car while she was driving with a ring he had bought a half hour prior. It
worked! But a month later he proposed again with a better ring and a better
experience followed by a surprise party with their families!

real wedding
kick it off
STEPS TO PLANNING YOUR
ENGAGEMENT PARTY:
1. Select a location that fits the vibe you are going
for during your engagement party. For the
perfect cocktail style engagement party, choose
The Upstairs Cocktail Lounge, a swanky bar,
known for serving handcrafted drinks and food
you won’t forget.
2. Set a date. Ideally, your engagement party should be a
few months after your engagement, but with enough
time to invite your loved ones from far away.
3. Have a killer invite created that shows off your
style and sets your guests expectations. For a fun
and whimsical party, have Sweet Zion Paperie
create a highly dimensional custom cork and wood
laser cut box invitation.
4. Work with a local florist to create custom
arrangements, like these exquisite arrangements
designed by Boulder Blooms.
5. Look your best the day of the party. Get dolled up and
have your hair and makeup done by Shear Abby Salon.
6. Hire a photographer to capture it all. Check out artist
and visual storyteller Amanda Berube Photography.
7. Mingle with guests and show off your beautifully
crafted Sarah O. engagement ring.
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
Celebrate the beginning of your engagement season while you enjoy beautifully
curated cocktails and use the opportunity to start your search on your wedding
day signature drink. Have fun with the colorful concoctions like the vibrant red
of Medusa's Apothecary (recipe on page 144), the purple Siren made with gin,
butterfly pea flower, orgeat and lemon, or Styx and Stones' yellow mixture or rye,
armagnac, banana liqueur and creme de cacao.

LOCAL BITES
Create a menu from the Lounge’s locally sourced,
sustainable ingredients to develop a plate for every palate.
Enjoy a combination of delicate hors d’oeuvres icluding
sourdough covered with whipped ricotta, heirloom tomatoe,
fennel pollen and basil, roulade crispy chicken surrounded
by summer vegetables and a cream corn custard, elote
fritters on a bed of tajin ailoli and sprinkled with fresno,
cotija, cilantro or king salmon poke topped with avocado,
cucumber, yuzu kosho and a slice of crab chips.

vows
On the outskirts of town lives a serene space worthy of a real life
storybook. At this magical place your private ceremony comes alive
with cottonwood tress and tall grasses and your intimate reception
shines in the modern barn with it's perfect setting to gather and raise
a glass to your next step: a happily ever after. COLLECTIVE/by
Sachs' goal in designing this inspiring fall wedding was to showcase
not only the aspirational, but also realistic ideas couples can
implement into their own wedding. The creative team focused on
showcasing inherent elements of the venue, The Glen, with added
enhancements that can be repurposed between the ceremony and
reception, such as the wodden crossback ceremony chairs provided
by Colorado Party Rentals, breathtaking florals lovingly designed by
Laud Farms, and specialty lounge elements curated from Bear
Aesthetics's event rental house.
ATTAINABLE ELEGANCE
This darling styled shoot set out to focus on rustic elegance and sophisticated yet
organic design details that are approachable. Hand-forged ferns from Pagosa
Springs line the ombre ceremony aisle, while pheasant feathers from the venue’s
sporting club adds a local touch.

BEAMING HIGHLIGHTS
As seen throughout, Lindsey of COLLECTIVE/by Sachs' desire
was to capture the wedding day experience. "We wanted to bring
the wedding day experience alive! Focusing on a gorgeous fully
stocked welcome bar for pre-ceremony drinks in The Glen, live
ceremony music with the couple serenaded as they exit for their
recessional, mixed guest seating; chairs and benches for the couple
who doesn’t want too much structure, a decked out king's table as a
design focal point of the reception experience, and a lively dance
party on the patio with the bride changing her hairstyle and dress."

STEP
STEP
Cross Over: To start, one
end of the bowtie should be
about an inch longer
than the other. Cross the
short end over the long
end.
Begin to Tie: Tie the short end
around the long end, pulling
the short end up toward
your collar. Use the long
end to create a half bow.

STEP
STEP
Half Way There: Pull the half
bow onto the side where the short
end is resting. Take the short end
and bring it down on top of the
half bow. This creates the center
of your bowtie.
Pinch, Fold and Pull Through:
Pinch the half bow and
remaining long side end around
the short end, creating a gap
between the bow and neck tie.
Take the short end, fold it to
create a half bow and feed it
through the gap. This forms the
center knot.

HEARTWARMING & INTIMATE WEDDINGS FOCUSED ON THE TWO OF YOU
marcella laine
Aubrey + Will
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
Aubrey and Will have the classic story of a mutual friend saying, “Oh you two should
be friends, you guys would absolutely hit it off!” They were right, because two and
a half years later while Aubrey was on a trip to Europe with her family, a surprised
bride-to-be found her beau in a beautiful rose garden in Barcelona that her mother
insisted they visit. Aubrey remembers as they walked down through a hill of roses:
“When Will asked me to marry him, it was like a shocking, beautiful dream and I
am not even entirely sure I actually ever said yes, because I was so surprised. He acted
like it all was the simplest thing in the world, to fly across the world to propose, simply
because he wanted me to be entirely surprised.” Upon returning home, they planned
their desert-toned, whimsical wedding for July 22nd.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Will’s little brother was the officiant, Aubrey’s 81 year old grandma was the flower girl. They
had only immediate family by their side at their ceremony and it was the greatest decision
they could have made. In Aubrey’s vows she shared her favorite quote from Walt Whitman
that said, “I have perceived to be with those I love is enough, To be surrounded by beautiful,
breathing, laughing flesh is enough, I do not ask any more delight than this, I swim in it, as I
swim in a sea.” The couple felt, “Those words encompassed the day and ceremony so wholly.
Everything from our ceremony was centered around the people that we love the most in the
world, and it was more than enough.”

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES
“Above all else, be friends first. Root
for one another, cheer for one another,
and fight for one another. Never allow
one another to walk alone, and always,
always, always encourage adventure.”

Brooke + Jeremy
LOVELAND PASS
Brooke and Jeremy met on an app, Tinder, on an early Saturday morning around 5am.
Turned out they are both morning people and after one week of flirting via text they met
up for their first date. Ten months later, to cross off one of the items on the bucket list they
made together during the first few weeks together, the couple headed to Alaska “to see
the Northern Lights.” Jeremy asked Brooke to marry him with that same list by filling in
the last spot with “Ask Brooke to marry me.” With Jeremy down on one knee, asking for
her hand, Brooke said “YES!!!” and had to take off her gloves to put the ring on! They
planned a classic fall elopement for September 18th!
PROMISING FOREVER
“We wrote our own vows to each other, and said a prayer. We also gave our
parents the opportunity to write us a letter to read during our ceremony, to
incorporate them on our big day.”
ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE & GROOM
1. “To make the day about you
two and no one else! Remember
that through all the planning,
emotion, and expectations.”
2. “Do some sort of pre-marital
counseling to really start off on the
right foot for your marriage. We
found it so helpful to ensure that we
grow together and are prepared for
life’s many adversities. One of the
best things we have heard is, “Many
people are ready for a wedding, but
not a marriage.”
3. “Regardless of budget, where
or when, set aside a time for a
honeymoon to truly enjoy each other
as a newly married couple.”

Julia + Ry
HOPE PASS
Ry and Julia met the old fashioned way, through the internet. Their first date was on
a snowy February night at a brewery in Denver, Colorado. Ry wore a gray cardigan
and Julia wore maroon-colored heels. According to Ry, it was love at first sight. They
were inseparable from that night forward. Ry proposed on a bluebird Colorado day
in March. Ry chose an unmarked peak near their home in Eagle, CO. There was no
trail so they forged their own route to the top. While Julia took in the views with their
two Golden Retrievers, Ry got down on one knee and asked her to be his adventure
partner forever. Julia was completely surprised but immediately said yes!
INTIMATE MOUNTAINTOP CEREMONY
The ceremony location was chosen for the beautiful view of the snowcapped
mountains. Their day started at 4 a.m. with a nearly 3,000
foot climb up the trail in the dark with their closest friends and
family. Julia recalls, “We were buzzing with excitement and
watched the sun rise as we hiked to the top of the pass in our
wedding dress and suit.”
ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“Our advice to couples planning
an elopement wedding is to choose
a location that has meaning
to you both. Hunting for the
perfect location is part of the
adventure, and once it is chosen,
the rest of the details will fall
into place. It is also important
to remember that despite all the
planning you should always have
a contingency plan. Weather
can be unpredictable, so we
chose two back up locations in
case a blizzard, high winds, or
thunderstorm made our location
impracticable on the day of the
ceremony.”

Mattie + Joey
BRECKENRIDGE
A few months after Mattie went to Verona, Italy and rubbed Juliet’s
statue, Mattie & Joey met in college at Texas Christian University
where they were both athletes. The two joke to this day that they
are under a spell for as the legend says your luck with love will turn
around within the year! Five years after finding love, Joey and Mattie
were spending christmas together with their dachshund when Mattie
returned to the kitchen to find Joey down on one knee! Completely
shocked, Mattie exclaimed, “What are you doing?” Joey proceeded to
declare his love and asked his soon-to-be bride to marry him. Together
in their matching Christmas pajamas, Mattie said “Yes!” They planned
an elegant classic mountain wedding for June 13th!

FAVORITE MOMENT
“Our favorite moment was finally seeing each other at the
ceremony. We had talked about our wedding for years,
but we truly planned this in just over 2 weeks. So there
was a lot of chaos and noise that came with those days,
even minutes, leading up. So when my veil came off and
we looked at each other everything was still and just as
it should be. It was a magical moment we both will carry
close to our hearts forever.”

Kendall + Dusty
ARAPAHOE BASIN
Kendall and Dusty met in college at University of Colorado Boulder after a mutual
friend invited them to join their calculus study group. After 10 years of dating, Dusty
proposed on a family trip to Maui over Thanksgiving. He asked Kendall if she wanted
to go for a walk down the beach and kindly suggested she change since they would be
leaving for dinner soon after. Without thinking a thing, she did just that and they headed
off. At the end of the beach lay a grassy knoll and a beautiful lookout which Kendall
was admiring only to turn around to Dusty on one knee. A totally surprised Kendall
said “Yes” and they returned to the house where family awaited with champagne! They
planned their modern rustic wedding for June 29th.

PERSONAL TOUCHES
“Our ceremony was very personal and we
were married by one of our best friends,
John. It was short and sweet. We each wrote
our own vows spanning twelve years of love.
Everyone laughed and cried. There wasn’t a
dry eye.”
ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“One of our favorite moments was when we stole a few minutes after the ceremony for just us,
alone - no photographer, no family, no friends. Our moment was pretty unconventional since we
were on our skis and halfway down the mountain! It gave us an opportunity to reflect on our
new marriage and take in this incredible high we were feeling. It was really special to have this
time for just the two of us.”
TIP: Opt for a longer engagement
which eliminates stress and allows for
personalizing your day and
incorporating stress-free DIY projects.

Lauren + Kyle
GRANBY
After graduating from nursing school,
Lauren moved to Colorado Springs to
chase adventures, not boys! Three weeks
into her move she met Kyle, who was
stationed at Fort Carson, at church and the
two become instantly inseparable. Nine
months of dating and many adventures
later, Kyle, who was terrible at keeping
secrets, planned a weekend getaway in
the mountains. Lauren, suspicious of the
weekend away, thought she was prepping
for the perfect mountain proposal by
packing the cutest cold weather hiking
outfit. However, Kyle had different plans
in mind! When Lauren arrived to his
house on Friday evening before the trip,
she was quite surprised to see her beau
awaiting to greet her in a suit.
Kyle led Lauren into his backyard via a
candle lit walkway, adorned with pictures
of their lives together, that guided her to
lights that read “MARRY ME”. Kyle got
down on one knee and told her how much
he loved her and had been praying for a
women like her. The two planned a casual
boho mountain wedding for August 31st!

“We loved everything about our day, but not much tops having our closest friends and family all in the same
place. With us being from opposite sides of the country, pretty much everyone had to fly to Colorado to be a part
of our day and it was so special celebrating with our favorite people.”

FOUNDATIONS
“Our faith is foundational to our relationship and to spotlight this, we took communion during our ceremony. It
was such a special time for us to focus our hearts on the One who brought us together. Jesus’ forgiveness, grace,
blessings, joy, and unending love for us were felt so strongly on that mountaintop. Second to this, speaking aloud
our vows to one another - these will forever be our favorite. We keep each others vows on our nightstands and to
this day, we love to cuddle up and reproclaim our love and commitment to each other.”
rocky mountain bride colorado fall & winter 2020 / rockymountainbride.com 111
ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“I think wedding planning
is stressful whether you
do it in three months or
thirteen months. Get good at
prioritizing, time managing,
and of course enjoy the season
you’re in because it’s so
beautiful. During the craziness
of wedding planning we
would have to be intentional
about our time together being
about each other and not
about the wedding. We even
took a weekend off planning
to go camping and made a
pact not to bring up anything
wedding related. Such a sweet
time loving on each other and
remembering why we were
going through all the craziness
in the first place. And most
importantly, keep Jesus at the
center of it all.
TIP: On your wedding day, make every
moment count. Steal the seconds on your
way down from the ceremony to reception
to reflect on the beauty of your day!

Hillary + Mark
BRECKENRIDGE
Mark and Hillary met while working in Tulsa, Oklahoma at a hospital.
Mark had just moved there and was doing his Orthopedic
Surgery Residency while Hillary was completing her rotations as
a medical student. The two quickly hit it off and went on their
first date after just one week! After dating for two and a half years,
with lights all around, Mark got down on one knee and proposed on
Christmas Eve. They planned their intimate and heartfelt wedding
for September 2nd.
PRIVATE VOWS
“Our favorite moment of the day was our private vows and first look which
was done at Blue Lakes. It was the most intimate moment of the day. Having
that special time together before the day really got going was so precious to us!
It was so full of raw emotion and love.”
ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“Take time to enjoy all the small moments of the day.
The day really goes so fast! Also, make sure to carve
out time for just you and your significant other. It’ll be
precious time you cherish.”
TIP: Instead of a first look, opt for
private vows. Not only does it make for
incredible photos, it gives you and yours a

while Xiangqian was on her way to Denver from Beijing with 10 hours to fill. Coincidentally, they
called the same mutual friend who lived there wanting to connect for lunch. One lunch was all it
took and a year and a half later, on a trip to Aspen, they took a sunrise hike to the Maroon Bells
where Shaobo proposed to Xiangqian as the sun rose. The pair planned an autumn wedding for
September 15th at the top of Vail Mountain.

Annie + Stephen
COLORADO SPRINGS
Annie and Stephen both played soccer in college and met during preseason their freshman year. Quick to
become friends the two didn’t start dating right away, but deep down both knew they would end up together.
After college, Chicago became home and where Stephen worked for a real estate firm who revitalizes and
renovates old buildings. Annie was dying to see their most recent project, an old post office in Chicago, and
Stephen said he could sneak her in. When they arrived there was a blanket, champagne, macaroons, and
flowers awaiting them in the grand lobby. He popped the question, and she said yes! They planned a
minimalism meets boho fall wedding in Colorado Springs for November 17th!

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE
“Don’t get lost in a Pinterest hole when trying to plan your wedding.
Your wedding is yours, so plan it for YOU, not to impress anyone.”
ADVICE FROM THE GROOM
“This might be just us, but let it happen - embrace the day. Scream if
you want to, laugh too loud, give an impromptu toast. Annie gave an
unplanned thank you speech at the reception, and let loose. It’s cheesy,
but it’s your day to unashamedly be yourself and celebrate being with
the person you love the most.”
rocky mountain bride colorado fall & winter 2020 / rockymountainbride.com 131
TIME STOOD STILL
"During the ceremony, time stood still. It was so beautiful that it
took everyone’s breath away. The most important people in our
lives spoke at the ceremony, pouring out love, wisdom, and
blessings with every word. The most precious reading came from
Stephen’s nana, who writes a poem for each grandchild that says
'I do.' Stephen’s grandfather married the two and my dad gave a
blessing after walking me down the aisle. It truly was a family
affair! Our families are both Christian, so we had a lot of prayer,
which was really special. It was one of those moments in life that
helps you make sense of where you’ve come from, what you’ve
gone through, and where you’re going."
ocky mountain bride colorado fall & winter 2020 / rockymountainbride.com 133
SEASONS OF LIFE
“The day exceeded our expectations in every single way. We had every person we love from all
over the world in one place at the same time. It brought together our best friends from different
seasons of life who live across the country, reunited relatives, and made us feel so loved.”
