Before becoming a parent, I never truly valued or took full advantage of our region’s public parks. Sure, I visited them for the occasional picnic, jog, or game of tennis, and knew they brought natural beauty into neighborhoods, but never realized just how crucial they are to a community.
Now, as the mom to a tantrum-prone toddler, parks—playgrounds, in particular—are a daily destination for us. Give my daughter a sandbox, swing set, and an open field to frolic in, and her attitude instantly improves. In addition to providing hours of free, fresh-air amusement, they’ve also proven to be a primo place to meet fellow mom friends. (If you’ve never watched “Dear Cool-Looking Mom in the Park” on YouTube and feel like laughing, check it out. It pretty much sums up my attempt at having a social life these days.)
Lucky for us, our region is overflowing with parks (hundreds, in fact, with even more in the works) waiting to be explored. Turn to “Walk in the Park” on page 22 for 10 of our favorites—picked for their abundance of amenities, environmental components, stunning scenery, or all the above. Next time you find yourself in a funk, the solution might be as simple as going for a stroll in one of these gorgeous green spaces.
Readers looking for other outdoor diversions are in luck. There’s plenty more ideas in the pages that follow—from our feature, “Choose Your Own Adventure” (page 59) that’s jam-packed with alfresco activities like chasing waterfalls, nerding out on birds, and discovering local downtown districts; to “Nurture Nature” (page 26), where we talk about the importance of Earth Day and easy ways to lessen your environmental impact today, and every day; and “Home Grown” (page 44) featuring nine secrets to garden success this spring.
If you’ve never considered yourself “green” or “outdoorsy,” I hope this issue inspires you to think differently, act accordingly, and play outside whenever, however you can. Because, if you’re anything like me, even 10 minutes of fresh air will make a monumental difference in your day. Cheers!

#What’sUp?
by MEGAN WISKUS
Congrats to the City of Placerville for
being awarded second place for their
National Night Out 2020 campaign.
The 37th annual event—which enhances
the relationship between neighbors and
law enforcement while bringing back a
true sense of community—involved over
16,000 communities across the U.S. For
this year’s celebration, a small portion
of the street between Sourdough & Co.
and the Bell Tower was sectioned off
for socially distanced street dining and
meal deals at participating restaurants,
including Amore Mio, Placerville Public
House, and Powell’s Steamer Co. & Pub.
Those interested in helping to plan this
year’s NNO can reach out to the Placerville
Police Department at 530-642-5210.
Congrats to the Folsom Telegraph

newspaper in Sacramento County, and
the fourth oldest weekly publication in
California, it has grown from being a
four-page paper (known as The Granite
Journal) published in a Historic Folsom
basement to being the primary source
of trusted, reliable community news.
There’s a new nonprofit in town! Placer
Business Alliance (placerbusiness.
com), which is dedicated to preserving
and enhancing Placer County’s business
climate through direct engagement with
local and regional leaders, has been
established to help further economic
development in the region. To see
how your business can benefit, email

5 Top Teens
BY TARA MENDANHA
Despite the challenges and adversities of the past year, our students
have still managed to come out on top. Here are some of the region's
best and brightest minds.

Thomas Rexin

VISTA DEL LAGO HIGH SCHOOL
homas has already made great strides in his 17 years. An
active member of the California Scholarship Federation and
Key Club, he’s been a student senator and National Honor
Society inductee for the last three years. He’s also adept at the
clarinet and has earned his music varsity letter.
Eagar to share his time and talents, Thomas is a peer tutor
on STEM subjects and helps second graders with reading and
comprehension skills. He also happens to be a big basketball fan,
having co-founded his school’s basketball club and worked as a
Folsom Youth Basketball Association official. “I thrive to have a
balanced lifestyle, keeping fit by eating right, playing basketball,
working out, hanging out, and playing video games with my
friends,” says the well-rounded teen.
After earning a perfect composite score of 36 on his first try
of the ACT, Thomas will be dual graduating this year with a high
school diploma and associate degree in interdisciplinary studies
in math and science from Folsom Lake College. “I’m proud of
these accomplishments because I worked really hard, and it
proved to me that hard work does pay off…I plan to earn my
bachelor’s degree in the STEM field,” he says.
Thomas’ biggest aspiration is to give back to the community.
Realizing the importance of people in his life, he is constantly
inspired by his grandparents and looks up to his godfather, Tony,
who supports all his endeavors. “The pandemic has given me a
new perspective on life and taught me to take advantage of the
time that we have with friends and family.”

A
sk Jacob how he would describe himself and you get an
honest yet endearing answer: “oddly mature but still loves to
have fun!” This grown-up teen is passionate about helping
homeless veterans and uses his position as youth president of
Sacramento Stand Down (sacramentostanddown.org)—a nonprofit
that works to get homeless veterans off the street, providing
adequate health care, shelter, employment, and more—to build
awareness and garner support among his peers to the plight of
veterans today. “It’s very satisfying when I can make a positive
difference in another person's life,” he says.
When he’s not out championing this cause, Jacob spends his
time playing basketball, video gaming, and between numerous
clubs—Asian Pacific, Mathletes, and Theoretical Astrophysics, to
name a few. A member of the Boy Scouts of America, he’s also
earned Eagle Scout status—something he’s very proud of.
Jacob strives to be like his father, who has a strong work
ethic and unique approach to life. A member of the National
Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation, Jacob will
be attending Emory University next year—his first time living
outside California. “I'm looking forward to living in the South,” he
says excitedly, ready to face any adventure head-on. “One thing
the pandemic taught me is that everyone deals with fear in a
different way. I would like to make sure that I approach things
with an open mind.”

K
riti has as many accomplishments as she has interests.
Her love for speech, debate, advocacy, and volunteerism
has translated into many worthy undertakings, and she’s
determined to make her voice be heard in everything she does.
Her most recent vocation has been her podcast, “Spill the
KriTEA” (available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts), where she
discusses societal issues and personal passions for an audience
of her peers. Topics include the Black Lives Matter movement,
skincare, and literacy, and she’s reached listeners in far-flung
places like Morocco, France, and Nigeria. Kriti also spends her
time studying skincare and shares her experiences and tips on
her blog, Let’s Detox About It.
Another way she uses her voice is at Cognitive Exchange, a local
student-run nonprofit that aims to teach speech and debate to
students in impoverished places across the world to “uplift human
potential and provide students with the power of democratic
thinking.” Her group’s efforts have resulted in over 4,500 graduates,
expanding to schools in Africa and South America. “I’ve had the
privilege to collaborate with CEOs and school administrators, but
also meet so many compassionate individuals working to uplift their
own communities,” she says, adding, “in the future, I definitely hope
to travel more and work with more nonprofits—hopefully volunteer
with the Peace Corps in Africa for a few years after college.”
Life is one big, beautiful adventure to Kriti and there doesn’t
seem to be an end in sight. “We only have one life, so working
hard, doing my best, and taking risks motivates me!”

Laine Weber

GRANITE BAY HIGH SCHOOL
Kylie Cox
17
PONDEROSA HIGH SCHOOL
L
aine is a champion lacrosse player but that isn’t the only
thing she’s good at. “Not many people know about my high
GPA,” she says. “Most people look at athletes and assume we don’t
put a ton of effort into academics when that is not true.” After all, if
it weren’t for her sport and academic accomplishments, she might
not have gotten into the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Laine's love of lacrosse began in the third grade when the
Granite Bay High School girls' lacrosse team conducted a clinic
during PE. "I rushed home with a flyer and told my mom that
I wanted to play lacrosse," she recalls. She's played nonstop
ever since and has even won the Sacramento Valley Lacrosse
Championship with her team.
Laine was 15 when she met the U.S. Coast Guard women’s
lacrosse head coach at a showcase. Her grandma encouraged
her interest in the career and Laine applied to their “Cadet for
a Day” program where she got to shadow a lacrosse player and
experience cadet life. From then on, Laine knew this was what
she wanted to do. “I’m often questioned about my decision to
pursue a military career, because it’s a very unconventional path
for someone from my background,” she says, owing much of her
confidence to her supportive parents.
Off-field, Laine likes to watch The Office and participate at her
church. And she’s counting down the days till she leaves for the
Academy. “I'm excited to receive an excellent education and give
back to the country and communities I love.”
FAVORITES
ESCAPE: Any place outside enjoying nature and my dogs.
GUILTY PLEASURE: In-N-Out Burger.
MEAL IN TOWN: Hazumi Sushi Bar.
LOCAL LANDMARK: 5% Beach at Folsom Lake.
MOVIE: Happy Gilmore.
MUSICIAN/BAND: J. Cole.
BOOK: Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.
SAYING: "You have to do what others will not to get ahead."
K
ylie loves all the regular teen stuff—reading, hanging out
with friends, watching movies…then there’s the other side to
her—the one that excels in sports and school. An active member
of the California Scholarship Federation, she’s president of the
Key Club, has won over 20 local beach volleyball tournaments
over the last year, and plays piano. Despite having a full plate,
Kylie has also volunteered at the Cameron Park Library and The
Bookhouse in Cameron Park, accumulating 200 community
service hours in four years—all while raking up a 4.47 GPA. With
such outstanding achievements, it’s no wonder that this
valedictorian was recently named “Student Service Leader of the
Month” by the Kiwanis Club of Placerville.
Kylie’s keen on becoming a neurologist to treat people
with brain disorders and research cures for neurodegenerative
diseases. “I’ve been following the news every day during the
pandemic, and it’s been eye-opening to see how the medical
world is reacting to COVID-19,” she says. The pandemic also
taught her to step out of her comfort zone. “I was a very ‘safe’
person, [sticking] to what I knew would be successful in the end.
However, I’ve lost so many opportunities due to quarantine and
realized that I can’t take things for granted anymore; I should take
risks and make the most of every opportunity,” she says.
Looks like opportunity’s come knocking, for Kylie’s been
offered a full-ride scholarship to the University of Alabama and
has also been accepted to Notre Dame. “I know that if I put in the
effort, I will be rewarded later by my success.”

Nurture Nature
Celebrate Earth Day
by EMILY PETER-COREY
Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22, but it’s much more than a one-day event; it
encourages a mindset that should last year-round. It can be overwhelming to learn about our
harm on the environment and change habits, but an easy place to start is with the ethos of
reduce, reuse, recycle.
The first Earth Day was created in 1970 by Senator
Gaylord Nelson to force Congress to address
the environmental issues Earth was facing.
Twenty million Americans participated in the
first celebration by taking a stand against environmental
ignorance and demanding change for our planet. By
December of 1970, Congress authorized a new federal agency,
the United States Environmental Protection Agency, aimed to
address environmental issues. Over the past 51 years, since
the first Earth Day, environmental changes include planting
hundreds of millions of trees, providing environmental
education cleaning up plastic pollution, and much more. Join
over one billion participants and take action this Earth Day.
There are countless ways to reduce environmental
harm in your everyday life. From reducing plastic use
and meat consumption to picking up trash on walks
and requesting paperless billing, small steps made by
everyone can create a huge impact on our planet.

Eco-Friendly Tips
• Reduce paper towel consumption
by using kitchen towels and
washcloths to clean up messes.
• Trade plastic baggies for reusable
silicone ones or beeswax wraps.
• Avoid single-use products and invest
in reusable ones: totes, straws, water
bottles, food storage containers.
• Reduce food waste by having an
“Eat Me First” food bin front and
center, and freeze what you can
before it goes bad for future use.
• Turn off lights when you leave a room.
• Take shorter showers. And keep
a bucket in the shower to collect
water while it warms up; use
that to water your plants.
• Create your own all-purpose cleaner
be soaking citrus peels in vinegar.
• Line-dry your clothes.
• DIY confetti by hole-punching leaves.
• Follow @wastefreesac on Instagram
for localized tips on where and how
to recycle, eco-friendly services,
sustainable shopping, and more.
• Plant a tree! Visit the Sacramento Tree
Foundation (sactree.com) for tips.
• Opening this spring, Village General
Store in Roseville will offer a BYO
container refillery (you can also
purchase containers at the shop)
for household staples like spices,
pasta, beans, and cooking oils, plus
bath and body essentials, cleaning

• Recycle this magazine or use
it for craft projects. Scour

COVID-19 has continued to pause
in-person events, so create your own
celebration at home! Start with making
your coffee from the comfort of your
kitchen or asking your favorite local
café to use your own reusable mug.
If possible, bike or walk to work and
reduce car pollution throughout the
day. Prepare plant-based meals and
utilize your reusable water bottle. Take
a walk to simply enjoy what Mother
Nature has to offer…and pick up some
trash along the way if you can. Lastly,
research and invest in more ways to
create an eco-friendlier footprint and
help the environment. In no time, this
“celebration” will become second nature
and our planet will thank you for it.
Let us know how you plan to help the
environment! Email info@stylemg.com.

Parenting in a
Pandemic
9 Tips to Help Kids Cope BY MEGAN WISKUS
As parents, the coronavirus has thrown us,
and our kiddos, a complete curveball—bringing
up all sorts of emotions and wreaking havoc
on our mental health. Luckily, there are ways
to help little ones cope while keeping your
own cool, too. Here are some tips to help
guide families through these uncertain times.
1 Keep calm. Children don't
always have the words to express
what’s going on with them. When they
get upset, it’s tempting to get distraught
as well, but what they need most is for
us to help calm them down. Talk about
what they might be thinking and
feeling, then help them label the
emotion. Offer validation and empathy
and teach them what to do with their
emotions. Often when it's named and
heard, it will diminish rather quickly.—

Take care of you. Apologize if
you need to and maintain good
self-care. Remember: You’re a model for
your children, and they look to you on
how to handle things. If you continue to
take care of yourself, you’ll be a more
positive parent, have energy, and be more
patient with your children. It's important
to have the strength to continue to set
boundaries and provide structure for
your family. As the airlines say, "Put your
own mask on before attempting to help
your children."—Nancy Ryan, MA, LMFT,
CEO, therelationshiptherapycenter.com
8
Have fun as a family. Many of
the ways we normally play with our
kids aren’t on the table right now, but
they haven’t stopped having fun. This is
the time to get into that Roblox game or
other activity that your little one won't
stop talking about. Follow their lead and
see where it goes.—Lauren Simas, MA,
LMFT, brillacounseling.com
2
Dream big. Make a bucket list as
a family of the places you want to
visit, things you want to do, and foods
you want to eat when the world opens
back up. Get specific about details and
put it down on paper. Break out the
crayons, art supplies, or whatever you
have on hand. Keep your list on the fridge
to keep the dream alive.—Lauren Simas,
MA, LMFT, brillacounseling.com
3
Remember that this too
shall pass. Adjust your
expectations of yourself and your
children in terms of productivity,
patience, and poise. This pandemic is
wreaking havoc on our kids’ sense of
their place in the world—remind them
that this is temporary.—Janette Robinson,
MA, LMFT, janetterobinsonmft.com
4
Movement matters. It’s hard
enough for adults to sit on Zoom for
hours at a time, let alone children who
are used to activity and in-person
classroom interaction. Encourage your
kiddos to move and stretch between
online activities, so they can sit again and
focus. If you can make something a
game, they’re much more willing to
comply. For example, how many times
can they run up and down the stairs in
one minute?—Nancy Ryan, MA, LMFT,
CEO, therelationshiptherapycenter.com
5
Make new memories. Kids
have missed out on so many crucial
milestones over the past year, but just
because crowd sizes are capped doesn't
mean you can’t celebrate big. Find
creative ways to make things special, like
throwing a superhero birthday party just
for your household.—Lauren Simas, MA,
LMFT, brillacounseling.com
6
Keep things predictable. Set
and maintain daily and weekly
schedules as much as possible, focusing
on rhythm when feasible instead of strict
timetables (to keep stress in check).—
Janette Robinson, MA, LMFT,
janetterobinsonmft.com
9
Stay social. Connecting with
others and having fun are highly
effective ways of decreasing sadness and
anxiety, which for many kids (and adults)
can be amplified during this extended
period of isolation. Carve out time for
outdoor play, family board games,
regular calls with relatives and friends,
socially distanced playdates, and even
online video games to keep little ones
linked to family members and the larger
world.—Janette Robinson, MA, LMFT,
janetterobinsonmft.com

Take a Hike
Stevens
Trail
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATED IN: Colfax.
DISTANCE: 7.7 miles out-and-back.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: This is a
long trail with little shade, so bring
plenty of water. Expect rocky and
wet conditions with a super steep
finish; not recommended for kids. Make
sure you don’t leave valuables in the car, as there
have been some reports of break-ins.
FUEL UP: Enjoy classic American comfort food
(think burgers, scrambles, melts, and more), hot
coffee, cocktails, mimosas, or all of the above

at Dine n Dash Pub & Grill
(dinendashpubandgrill.com).
With an inviting ambiance, superb
service, and hearty grub, you’ll be
ready for a day of adventure.
WHY WE LOVE IT: This trail has
beautiful views, waterfalls, and a rich
history. Long with a strenuous finish, it’s a
perfect spring hike and will help prepare you for
longer summer treks.
TRAIL NOTES: Bring shoes with traction. Dog-friendly,
but they must be leashed. Practice Leave No Trace
ethics and enjoy the views!
BEST PRACTICES:
BEFORE & AFTER
What you do both before
and after your hike is
the difference between
a positive experience
versus asking yourself,
“Why did I think this
would be fun?”.
Here are a few
considerations:
BEFORE YOUR HIKE
Nourish your body. Good
nutrition is key; proper
hydration is paramount.
Hydrate early and often.
Choose the right clothing. Bring
enough layers, plan for weather,
and choose the right shoes.
Let someone know where
you’re going. Being lost on a
trail is never fun; being lost,
cold, hungry, and scared
because no one knows
where you are is even worse.
AFTER YOUR HIKE
Stretch. Do some light yoga
or some simple stretches to
help you recover and improve
mobility.
Eat right. Eat protein soon
after your hike to help rebuild
muscles and speed up recovery.
Learn from your experience.
Things don’t always go
according to plan; see where
you can improve for next time.

BY EMILY PETER-COREY
Q: CAN I LEARN TO DANCE IF I
DON'T HAVE A PARTNER?
A: Absolutely! When you come into a
studio on your own, the teacher is able
to focus solely on you and you’re able
to get an immediate feel for the proper
form and technique of the dance; plus,
the cues from an instructor are super
clear, making it easy to lead or follow.
Ultimately, you’re able to learn a lot faster
working one-on-one with a teacher. So,
whether you have a partner or not, your
feet are in good hands!

Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF
SHOPPING CONSIGNMENT?
A: Consignment shopping is perfect for
those who want high-quality, budgetfriendly
items in an easy-to-navigate
space. It’s also perfect if you like a variety
of styles but don’t have tons of time to go
shopping, since you’ll find all the brands
at malls, boutiques, and high-end stores
in one place. I must admit, it will ruin you
for shopping retail, because you’ll get used
to paying much less for great stuff! What’s
more, the environment greatly benefits
when items are reused and consumers
don't buy brand new clothing and/or
accessories.

Handy Gardening Hacks
by MEGAN WISKUS
Nothing beats the taste of fresh-fromthe-vine
tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and
pungent peppers…especially when you pick the produce from your very own backyard.
Luckily, gardening is a skill that all ages, and abilities, can master. Follow these tips and
tricks—courtesy of Green Acres Nursery & Supply, Soil Born Farms, El Dorado Nursery, and
High Hand Nursery—and you’ll be diving into a fresh summer salad in mere months.
RAISE IT UP. Raised beds are an
ideal option for growing edible
plants. They offer convenience
and comfort—you can tend to
your garden with less bending
over or sitting on the ground—
and allow for more control
over the soil and amendments.
What’s more, soil in a raised
bed is typically warmer earlier
in the season, which will give
you a jump-start on your
summer garden.
VERY VERTICAL. Make the most
of your vertical space by
incorporating vining veggies—
cucumbers, beans, and even
cantaloupes—that can be
trained on a trellis.
On April 20, Soil
Born Farms is offering a
virtual “Ask a Farmer: Growing
Tomatoes” class from 7-8:30 p.m.
Beginner and seasoned gardeners alike
will benefit by learning tricks of the trade
to create and maintain a thriving harvest,
followed by a Q&A session.

BE WATER WISE. How often and how
much you water depends on the climate,
soil, and your garden’s sun exposure.
Vegetable plants want consistently moist
(not soggy) soil, so water low and slow.
Test your method, then stick with it,
increasing as the weather warms.
FROM THE GROUND UP. As you prepare
your garden, remember to take care
of the soil. Adding a good quality
compost mixed with G&B Organics
Planting Mix or using worm castings
(an organic form of fertilizer produced
from earthworms) will add nutrition,
refresh tired soil, and make a world of
difference in your harvest.
SEEDS HAVE NEEDS. If you start your
garden from seeds, be sure to space
them based upon how big the plant will
get and at the right depth (just below the
surface for small seeds and 1-1.5 inches
below soil surface for medium to large
seeds). Don't overcrowd them or your
adult plants will be unhealthy.
MULCH MATTERS. Your stone fruit trees
may be dormant now, but soon enough
they’ll be pushing buds and preparing

to fruit. Give them what they need now
with a good helping of compost around
the base of the tree and a layer of mulch
to retain moisture as the weather warms
up. Hint: Be sure to keep mulch at least
two inches away from the tree trunk to
protect it from mold and disease.
BORAGE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. The bright
blue flowers of borage (an edible, fastgrowing,
and attractive annual herb)
discourage tomato hornworms and
other damaging insects while bringing
in bees and additional pollinators—
making it both a deterrent and
attractant. Plant it in between tomato
plants, as well as squash, cucumbers, and
other flowering, fruiting plants.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Though warmseason
veggies are available now, you
should wait until the soil warms to 55ºF
to plant them—normally mid-April to the
beginning of May. If the soil is too cold to
sit on comfortably bare-cheeked, it’s too
cold for your plants.
PUT DOWN ROOTS. If your tomato plants are
leggy or floppy, remove the lower leaves
and plant them deeper. They’ll push roots
from the stem, which makes for a strong,
bushy plant.

30 + Outdoor Escapes
By Nelly Kislyanka & Tara Mendanha
We live in an outdoor paradise. Lakes, mountains, rivers, and wonderful weather means
every alfresco activity—from birdwatching to hiking, biking, and hot air ballooning—is
within reach. This spring, soak in some fresh air and explore more.

WINE & DINE
Wineries are taking outdoor dining to grand new heights,
with breathtaking views, fantastic pours, and indulgent
bites. Check out Lincoln’s Wise Villa Winery (wisevillawinery.
com)—the only winery in Placer County with a full-service
Tuscan-style bistro—and dig into flatbread or filet mignon
while basking in gorgeous sunsets and views of rolling hills.
Chateau Davell Boutique Winery (chateaudavell.com) in
Camino currently offers a charcuterie box to pair with their
wines while you sit out on the terrace. One of the newer
wineries on the block is Myka Cellars (mykacellars.com),
which—in addition to sustainable, craft wine—also serves a
mouthwatering menu full of sandwiches, salads, and more
(all made with locally grown ingredients from nearby farms).
GO FOR GOLD
It’s never too late to get in on the Gold Rush action. Go back to where it all began at Marshall Gold
Discovery State Historic Park (marshallgold.com) in Coloma. Sift through the same sands as the fortyniners
while basking in the history and the beauty of the area. Gold Bug Park & Mine (goldbugpark.org)
in Placerville allows for gem panning (when open) and while it’s not technically outdoors, the mine is a

treat to explore. Take it up a notch and plan a
panning vacation at Bear River Campground
(placer.ca.gov/5951/bear-river-campground) in
Colfax where there’s more gold to be found.
SHOOT FOR THE STARS
Warmer weather and clearer skies make for
perfect conditions to spot constellations
and crescents. Join the Sacramento Valley
Astronomical Society (svas.org) in Roseville
for monthly star parties (once they resume) or
check out their calendar for nightly sightings.
Then, head to Salmon Falls Bridge in El Dorado
Hills or Foresthill Bridge in Auburn for some
stellar views. The Community Observatory
in Placerville (communityobservatory.com) is
also a great place to study the night sky on
weekends. Catch a glimpse of major stars,
planets, galaxies, nebulae, and the moon
with heavy-duty telescopes during their
“star tours.” You can also join them for “Solar
Saturday” to sneak a close and safe peak at
our closest star.
OH SNAP!
While you’re out and about how about trying
your hand at some outdoor photography?
Whether you’re capturing the sunset or
having an impromptu shoot for your kids or
canine, pick up some equipment at Action
Camera (actioncamera.com) in Roseville and
head to any of the numerous jaunts local
photographers love: Miners Ravine Trail in
Roseville (well-maintained path that passes
by several parks and features a stream,
woodlands, large boulders), Johnny Cash
Trail in Folsom (especially the bridge), Willow
Creek Recreation Area in Folsom (many paths
and trees, a little bridge, island of rocks, tree
logs, boat dock), Beal’s Point at Folsom Lake
(fantastic sunset lighting, sandy hills, views of
the lake), Salmon Falls Bridge in El Dorado Hills
(flower fields, bridges, streams, hills, rocks),
or Negro Bar in Folsom (boat dock, views
of the iconic Rainbow Bridge, cliffs in the
background).
GO WILD...AT THE ZOO!
What is the great outdoors without some
animal action? Meet and greet with local
animal celebrities at the Folsom Zoo between
10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Friday through Sunday.
Admission requires advance online ticket
purchase (none sold at the gate) and can
be purchased at webtrac.folsom.ca.us. Find
an assortment of reptiles, felines, canines,
birds, primates, and more. If you’d like the zoo
to come to you, Hawks Ranch Petting Zoo
(hawksranchpettingzoo.com) in Loomis has a
mobile petting zoo, filled with goats, miniature
horses, alpacas, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and
even a miniature pig and donkey!

GO FISH
Did you know Folsom Lake has produced trophy-sized bass over
10 pounds? Or that it also holds rainbow trout, catfish, kokanee
salmon, and bluegill? Try your luck and get in on the angler action
at New York Creek, Deep Ravine Cove, Folsom Point, or Beal’s
Point. An accessible fishing pier is also available on Lake Natoma
at the Nimbus Flat park entrance, or you can check out “From
the Depths” (fromthedepthsfishing.com) a local club that’s open
to the public. But before you get hooked, don’t forget to obtain a
California Fishing License at wildlife.ca.gov/fishing.
PICNIC IN THE PARK
Johnson-Springview Park
The easiest and most fun thing to do outside is have a picnic.
Luckily, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to perfect picnic
spots. Choose from Promontory Park in El Dorado Hills (covered
play and picnic area, plus water features), Livermore Community
Park in Folsom (covered picnic area, BBQ pits, baseball diamond,
water features), Kalithea Park in El Dorado Hills (views of the lake
and mountains, covered picnic area, baseball diamond), Folsom
Kids Play Park (shady trees, covered picnic area, separate play
areas for older and younger kids, castle-like play structure), Maidu
Regional Park in Roseville (ample fields, picnic space, access to the
Maidu Museum and Library), Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin
(shaded picnic areas, BBQ pits), Royer Park in Roseville (ample
picnic space, parks for older and younger kids, creek nearby,
courts, horseshoe pit), Lions Park in Placerville (covered picnic
areas, BBQ pit, sport courts, parks for older and younger kids, disc
golf course) or Whitney Park in Rocklin (grassy areas, water feature,
play areas for older and younger kids, covered BBQ).
WALK THE “ MAIN ” STREETS
A stroll through our historic downtowns is a nice way to
spend the day. Placerville’s Historic Main Street brings
the Gold Rush charm with its antique shops, used
bookstore, candy shop, and the oldest hardware store
West of the Mississippi. The Folsom Historic District
is home to the public plaza and amphitheater, history
museum, and Sutter Street Theatre, aside from boutique
stores, stylish salons, art galleries, and some great
restaurants offering outdoor dining. Downtown Roseville’s
charming Vernon Street is a must-see destination. Its
town square is great for picnicking and the street itself
now has decking built on the sidewalks to accommodate
outdoor dining. Take a walk past the World War II
memorial, telephone museum, steam engine no. 2252
monument, and Mini Mural Competition.
CHASE WATERFALLS
Waterfalls abound this time of the year. With overgrown
flora and gushing fresh waters, these falls also boast
beautiful trails: Sly Park waterfall in Pollock Pines is 33
feet high at the northeast part of Jenkinson Lake; Hidden
Falls Regional Park in Auburn has a 30-foot waterfall and
over 30 miles of trails; Dutch Creek Falls in Garden Valley
has a rugged path to scenic twin waterfalls; Black Hole
of Calcutta Falls in Auburn is a 40-foot fall at the end of
an easy, quick hike over a wooden footbridge; and Bridal
Veil Falls in Pollock Pines is an 80-foot seasonal, drive-to
beauty off Highway 50.

Boarding on the Lake
HORSE AROUND
Explore the outdoors on the backs of these gentle creatures
and see the world from a whole new perspective. Boarding
on the Lake (boardingonthelake.com) in Granite Bay offers
rides along Folsom Lake trails, through wooded forests
and along the beach, while Shadow Glen Riding Stables
(shadowglenstables.com) in Fair Oaks offers western trail
rides along the American River at Lake Natoma.
EAT YOUR VEGGIES
The best part about living in one of the nation’s top
agricultural-producing states? A farmers’ market is at
your fingertips just about every day of the
week. Spend a crisp Saturday morning
strolling through the 70+ vendor booths
at the Historic Folsom
Farmers Market
(bemoneysmartusa.
org/historicfolsom),
pick up a bouquet of
fresh blooms at one
of the PlacerGROWN
farmers’ markets
(placergrown.org) in
Auburn or Roseville, or
grab just-picked produce
at one of El Dorado County’s
myriad markets starting in June
PlacerGROWN (eldoradofarmersmarket.com).
ROW YOUR BOAT
Are the rivers and lakes calling your name? Whether it’s a relaxing
kayak trip or an adrenaline-filled rafting trip, these places have you
covered for all your gear. American River Raft Rentals (raftrentals.
com) allows for self-guided raft trips on the lower American River.
Rent 4-12 person rafts, paddleboards, and 1-2 person kayaks.
Adventure Sports Rentals (adventuresports.rentals) offers regular
and pedal kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to use at Lake
Natoma. Sac State Aquatic Center (sacstateaquaticcenter.com)
offers kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes for a serene trip on Lake
Natoma. Rafting at the South Fork of the American River starts
this month and goes until September. Visit coloma.com/recreation/
whitewater-rafting for a list of outfitters.

American River Parkway
Nerd Out On Birds
Over 350 bird species follow the Pacific Flyway from Bering Strait to
South America, flying over California State Parks along the way, and
spring migration brings more than a billion birds back into California.
Folsom Lake, Lake Natoma, anywhere along the American River
Parkway, Cosumnes River Preserve, Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, Bass
Lake Regional Park, and Effie Yeaw Nature Center house some of
nature’s winged wonders—from different types of sapsuckers and
woodpeckers to turkey vultures and owls. The El Dorado Audubon
(eldoradoaudubon.org) and the Sacramento Audubon Society
(sacramentoaudubon.org) offer resources on birds that populate our
area, and where and when to find them. If you’d rather bring the birds
to your backyard, head to Wild Birds Unlimited (roseville.wbu.com) or
The Bird Shop (thebirdshoponline.com) in Roseville for supplies that’ll
have them flocking to your neck of the woods.

adventure is worthwhile in itself.
If you want a fresh perspective on your favorite
California views, take flight in a hot air balloon. Float
over Yolo County’s picturesque orchards with Yolo
Ballooning Adventures (yoloballooningadventures.
com); fly high with Sky Drifters (skydrifters.com)
and enjoy picture-perfect views of the Sierra
Nevada; or make a weekend of your adventure
with Balloons Above the Valley (balloonrides.com)
in Napa (we recommend their “Voyage Above
the Valley” package where you’ll enjoy first-rate
accommodations, morning refreshments, and
complimentary photos).
EAT & DRINK YOUR WAY THROUGH SAC
There’s a reason Sacramento has been named
the Farm-to-Fork Capital of the nation. Pound
the pavement with Local Roots Food Tours
(localrootsfoodtours.com) and find out all the city
has to offer in food, architecture, and history.

Thirsty for adventure? Discover new watering
holes with friends and family on the Sac Brew Bike
(sacbrewbike.com) where you’ll pedal through
scenic Sac stopping at the best local, and
locally owned, bars.
WORK IT OUT, OUTSIDE
Keep those quarantine pounds at bay (and
take advantage of April’s cool weather)
with outdoor workouts. Jazzercise Folsom
(jazzercise.com) is holding classes on the
patio at Hawkins School of Performing
Arts—blue skies only make these upbeat
classes better. For the mamas struggling to
carve out some kid-free time to exercise,
FIT4MOM Folsom Lake (folsomlake.fit4mom.
com) is partnering with the El Dorado
Community Services District to offer a
“Stroller Strides” class. Get in some outdoor
full-body conditioning while the kiddos stay
entertained with bubbles and songs.
HIT THE LINKS
There’s nothing like a round of golf to help
you unwind and recenter. Quiet, interrupted
only by the satisfying thwack of a club
meeting the ball, and walking lush lawns is
as much the fun of golf as competing against
friends. Granite Bay Golf Club (clubcorp.
com/clubs/granite-bay-golf-club) delivers
the complete package experience—scenic
fairways surrounded by oaks and wetlands, a
challenging course to satisfy your competitive
streak, and a beautiful patio (as well as a
top-notch kitchen) to toast your win. If you’re
looking to sharpen your swing, head to the
driving range at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex
(hagginoaks.com) in Sacramento.

Lover’s Leap
Auburn State Recreation Area
VISIT THE NEAREST STATE PARK
The Auburn State Recreation Area is a local favorite because it offers
access to an abundance of outdoor activities like fishing, boating,
mountain biking, and camping. Hike the Lake Clementine Trail to the
scenic dam overlook. The waterfall-like runoff, with its roaring waters
and bracing mist, is a great photo-op. You’ll also get a stellar bridge
shot as the trail winds underneath the famed Foresthill Bridge (as
seen in rom-com The Ugly Truth and a daring action scene from XXX).
For state park details, visit parks.ca.gov; for trail information, visit
alltrails.com.

ROCK (CLIMB) & ROLL
Don’t know how to get started with rock climbing? REI Co-op (rei.com/
events) in Folsom takes first-timers out to Auburn for an introductory
course. The best part is the reasonably priced adventure includes
the necessary gear. For the experienced climber, REI’s Classic Rock
Climbing Tour offers the chance to sharpen technique and build
community. Or take the entire family climbing at Quarry Park Adventures
(quarrypark.com) in Rocklin where you can scale natural granite walls,
repel down a 60-foot drop, or challenge yourself with their Via Ferrata
experience—a series of swinging bridges and climbing challenges. Also
in aptly named Rocklin is Lover’s Leap—“the leap” being one of the best
local spots if you’re looking for a more advanced adventure.

GO FLOWER SPOTTING
Start gathering ideas for this year’s garden by visiting
Sherwood Demonstration Garden (mgeldorado.ucanr.edu/
demonstration_garden) in Placerville. As you stroll through
16 individual gardens, pay attention to the plant labels
for water-use information; they’ll help you decide what
flower variety might be the right choice for your space.
Then check out what’s in bloom at Amador Flower Farm &
Nursery (amadorflowerfarm.com) in Plymouth. With 14 acres
to discover, a day here is the perfect alfresco diversion.
Just don’t forget to glean a few tips from
nursery staff so you can revel in your own
garden this year!
HAVE A “ BOARD ” MEETING
The first signs of spring always give
us a hankering for the water. Stand-up
paddle boarding gets you on our region’s
rivers and lakes; plus, the boards have
enough room to bring your pup, too!
Start by picking one up at SUP California
(supcalifornia.com) in Folsom. Once you’re
all geared up, head to one of the many
Folsom Lake access points—Willow Creek
Boat Launch, Folsom Point, Beal’s Point, or
Negro Bar, to name a few. To take paddle
boarding up a notch, try yoga on the
water with SUP DOG Paddle Board Yoga
(spotteddogyoga.com/supyoga.php) or Full
Circle Yoga & SUP (fullcircleyogasup.com).
GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE
Help your community by getting outside and making a difference. Download
the Charity Miles app (charitymiles.org), choose a route from the recommended
paved trails, and get moving! For every mile logged, a corporate sponsor donates
to the charity of your choice. If you’d rather use your hands, El Dorado County
Habitat for Humanity (edchabitat.org) can use some help with their Brush with
Kindness program where you’ll provide exterior home repair and maintenance, like
painting, landscaping, and replacing doors to benefit low-income households in
homeownership. We can’t forget our four-legged friends who need some love at the
Placer SPCA (placerspca.org)—sign up as a volunteer and take a pup for a walk.
If we could see the
miracle of a single
flower clearly
our whole life would
change.

BLAZE A TRAIL
A perk of our region is the plethora of paved
trails. Whether you prefer a walk, run, or
bike ride, Folsom’s 59 miles of trails offer
you endless routes. One of our favorite
biking adventures starts with picking up
a rental at Folsom Bike (folsombike.com)
followed by soaking in lake views as you
begin your route on the Folsom Lake Trail.
Hook onto the Johnny Cash Trail and
stop for a bite on Sutter Street before
heading back. If a jog is more your speed,
the Humbug Willow Creek Trail meanders
through scenic open space corridors. Other
paved paths to check out? Miners Ravine
Trail (8.4-mile heavily trafficked out-andback
route in Roseville) and the El Dorado
Trail (7.9-mile moderately trafficked outand-back
route near Diamond Springs).

Dining Out
Main Street
Tap House
BY LORN RANDALL // PHOTOS BY DANTE FONTANA
Korean Pork Street Tacos
“
Location, location, location.” I’ve heard it said a million times in regards
to the potential success of a restaurant. If that’s the case, then Main Street
Tap House in Downtown Placerville can look forward to a healthy 2021,
and beyond—they have location in spades. Sited just off Highway 50 on
Main Street, you literally can’t miss it.
The eatery has something else in spades that visitors will appreciate—

their parking lot—as spots can be a precious commodity in the historic hamlet’s
downtown district. They also have a beautiful open bar that will soon be serving
patrons their favorite libations (after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted). In the
meantime, there are high-top tables in front of the bar, abundant indoor seating
options, and a spacious patio area.
I stopped in for lunch on a
Louisiana Shrimp Dip sunny winter day to sample the
fare and gaze longingly at the
brew and cocktail menu (alas,
no designated driver). I asked my
server for their recommendations
and was told to start with the
Louisiana shrimp dip. The cheesy
amalgamation came scorching hot
in a cast iron pan with those “tricolor
tortilla chips” made popular
in the ’90s. The dip itself was tangy
(pickled jalapeños?), cheesy, and
beloved by my friend and fellow
dining partner.
Next on the list: Mexicano
flatbread with chorizo, steak,
jalapeño crema, pickled jalapeños,
onions, olives, tomatoes, and jack
cheese. The verdict? A generously
portioned fiesta de sabor (flavor party),
including a kick from the capsicum, that
would be plenty as an entrée or shareable
appetizer.
I took a chance on my server’s next
suggestion of baby back ribs in honey
sriracha barbecue sauce. I review a lot of
BBQ and a lot of ribs, and I also review actual
barbecues and smokers, so I have some
opinions. This rendition was wonderfully
meaty and plated nicely, though they would
have benefitted from a low and slow cook (my
preference). The fries and cilantro-fennel slaw
served alongside it were superb, however.
The Korean pork street tacos were my
favorite dish of the day; the sriracha barbecue
sauce wasn’t overpowering, and the combo
of pork and pineapple salsa was akin to al pastor. They came three to an order,
which was enough to share.
If you’re looking to cure a post-meal sweet tooth, their rotating cake selection
(like the berry shortcake with freshly whipped cream) can't be missed.
Stop in for one of their 20-plus beers on tap (many brewed locally) and a bite
to eat, and bring your friends!

A Part Café // Seldom do I go someplace new and immediately become a fan. It happens, but it’s not
the norm. A Part Café on Roseville’s Vernon Street is one of those places. They took on Covid-19 and all its
restrictions to open in late Summer 2020, and the reviews have been outstanding. They’re most well-known
for their shwacos and pocket pies—the former being a portmanteau for shawarma (a Middle Easternstyle
of spit-cooked meat, usually served on pita bread) and the ubiquitous Mexican/American taco. The
meats are rubbed in APC’s special shawarma spices, then smoked in applewood, and the results are like no
taco you’ve ever had. Their mint barbecue sauce (za’atar), cumin/yogurt/white sauce, and Thai pepper shatta
are all made in-house and add depth to the one-of-a-kind creations. Shwacos come in lamb, chicken, beef,
or vegetarian (stewed fava beans or smoked portobello mushrooms) on a pitatilla (fluffy flatbread) topped
with herbs and pickled onions. The pocket pies remind me of when I used to work next door to a piroshki
(meat-filled, deep-fried hand-pies from Russia) shop, except these are baked in a flaky crust, not deep-fried.
Pocket pies come in spinach and cheese, shakshouka (spicy stewed tomato and egg) and cheese, and beef
with tahini. The café has many other specialty goodies, too, plus full plates of their popular items, “Family
Shwaco Meal Kits,” sweet treats (the tahini chocolate chip cookie can’t be missed), and nitrogeninfused
mocktails…truly setting them apart from the region’s other restaurants. 217 Vernon Street, Roseville,
