It’s been two weeks since my family of three has grown to a family of five—and no, I didn’t have twins or adopt a pair of pups. We moved in with my parents while our house undergoes major construction (a remodel that will eventually be featured on HGTV; stay tuned, literally, for updates).
Transition is always an interesting time, especially when it involves returning to your roots and bunking up with your mom, dad, husband, and two-year-old. Mornings look different now (mainly louder…and earlier), family time is all the time, and privacy is pretty much nonexistent. It’s not better; it’s definitely not worse; it’s just different. But change, in my opinion, is oftentimes a good thing—especially when it involves a pool, built-in babysitters, and a fridge full of tasty food. Plus, my parents aren’t getting any younger, nor is my daughter, so I’m going to cherish this time together and make the most of our “summer vacation.”
If you, too, are looking to maximize the hot days ahead, keep reading. This month’s magazine will have you jumping for summertime joy, starting with our feature on page 53. From cool ice cream concoctions (including the colossal cone on our cover from Snooks) to in-person (finally!) events that run the gamut from a grape stomp at Wise Villa Winery to a good old-fashioned fair, plus top spots to make a splash, there’s something to ensure everyone has fun in the sun. Just remember: Be water wise (for top swim safety tips, see page 62), stay hydrated (don’t miss “Drink Up: The Importance of H20” on page 34), and wear sunscreen (check out our top blocks and other summertime essentials on page 40).
Finally, how could we forget the rad dads? Father’s Day is June 20, after all. When I asked my husband how he wants to celebrate, he replied: “a round of golf, followed by a beer and family BBQ.” Easy enough, eh? If you also have a golf-obsessed guy on your hands, check out “Greens with Envy” (page 24) for 10 tee-rrific public courses that are pretty without being pretentious. In “Family Matters,” we introduce you to four local fathers who go above and beyond for their kids and our community. Read their unique, and uniquely touching, stories starting on page 18.
There’s plenty of things to see, do, and celebrate this summer, so grab your loved ones (maybe even move in with them!) and seize the season. Cheers!

"I once bought actor Justin Long a
shot of whiskey, and he signed
the cast on my arm; my mom
and I sat next to Geena Davis
at dinner one night; and I saw
Brooke Shields in a West
Village bar and told her how
much I loved her in Jane the

“I don’t know how it happened but
somewhere along the way, I became a Barry
Manilow fan, aka Fanilow. I’d seen him in
concert many times, but the highlight
came on my 35th birthday. I was
in a restaurant in Malibu with
a girlfriend, and she said,
‘Holy cow, Barry Manilow
is over there!’ I waited
until he finished eating and
introduced myself. He couldn’t
have been more friendly and
happily agreed to a photo. I
wouldn’t say it’s the best birthday
ever, but it certainly ranks in the top five!”

during his role in Burn Notice,

“Walking in midtown Manhattan in 1999
with my girlfriend (and now wife),
Wendy Sipple, she pointed to
a man standing outside a
hotel and said, “Isn’t that
Muhammad Ali?” Well, it
was, and I walked up to him,
shook his hand, and told
him he was the greatest. His

a sweetness about him I can’t

magical—especially when
Oprah came through the double

hello, admired the pearls I was
wearing, and said: ‘You’re a

being here.’ I was starstruck!”

4 Rad Dads
BY TARA MENDANHA
Dads. They’re slayers of dragons, fixers of things,
teachers of lessons, and tellers of really bad
jokes. As we celebrate Father’s Day this month
(June 20), we’re grateful for the wit, wisdom, and
wonder they bring to our lives.
Rick Bartee
DAD OF
6
R
ick has shined in his
40-year career in the
fire service. “Being in a
position to help others never gets
old,” he says. Although this genteel
man is the current fire chief of Roseville,
to his six kids, he’s simply “dad.”
His son Kevin (39) is also a fire captain who shares many
traits with his dad; Sarah (34) is patient, soft-spoken, and works
for a water distribution company; and Kristin (32) is introverted,
expressive, and works in retail.
Rick and his wife, Jennifer, became certified foster parents
in 2005, welcoming siblings Milo and Tatianna whom they
later adopted. A few years after, a fellow firefighter looking for
foster care for a relative, brought Boston into their lives. He
was adopted thereafter and the three are now thriving. Tatiana
(17) is independent and loves the arts; Milo (14) is outgoing and
responsible; and Boston (10) is spirited and the most competitive
of the six!
Describe your foray into fatherhood.
With all the children, I cherish the times when they were little.
However, the times we went before a judge and were awarded
the adoption of the three younger children are especially great
memories. The years we spent fostering them while supporting
the birth parents were grueling emotionally, mentally, and
physically—yet rewarding.
What’s your parenting style?
My father was ex-military, which led him to parent in a very
authoritarian manner. I, on the other hand, try hard to connect
with my children so I can guide them, praise them, and meet their
needs. Being firm but warm, I hold high expectations but reward
equally.
How has fatherhood changed you?
I quickly learned I’m not perfect. It has helped me to continuously
take stock of what I’m doing, change what I can, and accept what I
can’t control.
What life lessons do you hope to impart to your children?
There will always be peaks and valleys in life—like a roller coaster!
Cherish the good times and learn from your mistakes.
Q&A Best part about

snapping pictures for Disney, Nike, and Kim Kardashian in Las
Vegas. He became a contractor in California and is now a head
technician. Chris has also done notable work for KidsFirst
(kidsfirstnow.org)—a counseling and family resource center—
assisting with their Forever Fathers program and even received a
certificate from Assemblyman Kevin Kiley for his efforts. He
adores his girls, too: Scarlette (14), his energetic biological
daughter, who is a Friends fan and loves cracking jokes; and Kailei
(15), his partner's daughter who considers Chris her dad and is
strong, independent, and a drama enthusiast.
Describe your foray into fatherhood.
When Scarlette was young, I was told I couldn’t see her anymore.
I wasn’t in a place to afford legal action so, unfortunately, we
had no relationship for a few years. Three years ago, I started a
reunification process and was awarded full custody about a year
ago. We now have a great relationship. Recently, teaching the girls
how to drive or talking to them about relationships and watching
them turn into women has been amazing to experience.
What’s your parenting style?
Firm but fair. With the kids it’s a fairly simple rule: If you try your
best and are honest then we’ll be as relaxed as possible. We also
have an open-door policy. If you did something just come tell us.
How has fatherhood changed you?
It taught me how to put others first. Having two girls taught me
to look at things from a female perspective. I now try and be an
example so when they’re in a relationship they understand what
it’s like to be treated properly.
What life lessons do you hope to impart to your children?
If you’re with someone who has a child, treat them as if they’re
your own. Be open to life. Love others no matter their finances,
race, sexuality, or education. Follow through with what you say
you’re going to do.
Q&A Best part about
being a dad: Watching
them grow and seeing
what you’ve instilled in
them as they navigate
life and become their
own person.
Favorite activity to
do with the kids:
Traveling/camping,
watching ’80s and ’90s
movies, and watching
them laugh at things I
remember laughing at.
Favorite dad joke:
Them: "What’s for
dinner?” Me: "FOOD.”
Them: “What kind of
food?" Me: "The edible
kind.” Them: *eyeroll*
Your ultimate dad
superpower: I’d love to
say my utility belt, but
Batman beat me to it, so
I’d say my ability to be a
dorky, fun dad and still
be their protector.
Best dad advice: Listen
to your children, listen to
your partner, and always
try and talk it out.
When the going gets
tough…Loosen up and
let your daughter paint
your nails, put your hair
in pigtails, and enjoy the
moment.

likely seen him at community events and festivities;
present at Rotary Club and Lions Club fundraisers; and
contributing his time to nonprofits like Folsom’s Hope, the
Folsom Bulldogs, and Twin Lakes Food Bank. Adrian’s also an avid
supporter of first responders and does a lot for them.
Amid his rigorous social schedule, Adrian also operates
Folsom’s beloved Adrian Blanco Jewelry—for which he’s won
numerous small business awards in an industry he’s been in
for over 20 years. “I believe small businesses are the lifeline of
our community and are what make Folsom so unique!” he says.

Describe your foray into fatherhood.
Having kids is something I've always
looked forward to since I came from a huge family [but] I truly
did not know the "love" my parents have for me until I became a
parent myself. It's that indescribable, unconditional love!
What’s your parenting style?
I oscillate between being an authoritative and permissive dad.
Setting rules are important but at the same time I believe in
letting kids be kids.
How has fatherhood changed you?
My desire to love, protect, and provide is stronger than ever. I've
realized that I'm able to feel certain emotions that I didn't know I
was capable of feeling. It's amazing!
What life lessons do you hope to impart to your children?
Every parent wants the best for their children. I just want them to
grow up happy knowing that they matter above anything else in
this world.

albeit “with very little

Serafin says. Christina (25) is a
black belt in karate, has a master’s
in applied physics from Harvard, and
works for a research lab; Joey (22) is an
Eagle Scout, rower, and natural leader who's currently studying
computer science at MIT; and Nick (20) was also a scout and is at
MIT where he sings with the Logarhythms.
Describe your foray into fatherhood.
Before we moved to Folsom in 1995, we were considering
adoption since children just didn't seem to be forthcoming.
There must be something in the water here since we ended up
with three awesome kids. Before Joey’s college freshman year at
MIT, we learned that he had a brain tumor. He subsequently took
a gap year to receive treatment at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis.
Dealing with his brain tumor was a real ordeal for the family, but
it also brought out the best in us.
What’s your parenting style?
Laissez-faire. I try to raise my kids by example, ensure that they
have options, and nudge them a bit while giving them space to
make their own choices.
How has fatherhood changed you?
The responsibility certainly changed my priorities. I would
probably be a bit more adventurous if I didn't have kids, but it's
been a fun, extremely rewarding ride.
What life lessons do you hope to impart to your children?
Do the right thing; give back to the community; use your talents
to make the world a better place; volunteer.
Favorite dad joke: Any

Haggin Oaks Golf Complex is home to 36 holes,
the largest on-course golf shop in the U.S., and
the largest player development program west of
the Mississippi. But don’t let that intimidate you,

Mather Golf Course’s tree-lined fairway continues to

Set among rolling hills, Empire Ranch Golf Club features 18 holes with an especially challenging

Hooked on Books
Summer Reading 101
by NELLY KISLYANKA
Immersing yourself in a good book—whether by the pool or under a shady tree—is the
perfect hot weather hobby. It’s relaxing, increases empathy, and boosts your brainpower;
plus, it’s cheaper than an airline ticket! Whether you’re into inspirational biographies
or scintillating who-dunnits, there’s a book to satisfy every whim. Keep reading for
recommended reads (courtesy of area bookstore owners and librarians)—and remember
to #ShopLocal.
Q&A WITH LOCAL BOOK LOVERS
Heather Duxler, Owner of The Bookhouse,
3000 Green Valley Road, Suite 13, Cameron Park,
530-350-8903, facebook.com/thebookhousecp
What’s your all-time favorite book?
My favorite classics are Pride and Prejudice by
Jane Austen, because it’s totally
enchanting and the perfect
escapist read; and Fahrenheit
451 by Ray Bradbury for its sheer,
emotional power. My copies
of Dune by Frank Herbert and
The Way of Kings by Brandon
Sanderson are held together by
rubber bands, because I’ve reread
them so many times. Both
titles include fantastic worldbuilding,
vivid characters, and
superb story arcs.
Which author do you consider a
must-read?
Fredrik Backman, Kristin
Hannah, and Jason Reynolds
for the heart; Mary Roach,
Isabel Wilkerson, and Haruki
Murakami for the mind; Paulo
Coelho and Don Miguel Ruiz
for the soul.
What book would you recommend for
summer reading?
Light, magical realism makes for
a good summer read, like Alice
Hoffman’s Practical Magic. And
don’t discount graphic novels as a
legitimate reading experience—they’re
perfect for summer and can elicit a
multitude of emotions on every page.
You can’t go wrong with Kami Garcia, Rainbow Rowell, Neil
Gaiman, or Joe Hill. I also highly recommend Leigh Bardugo’s
Six of Crows; I’m currently immersed in her Grishaverse
series and can’t wait to see the new screen adaptation!
What’s your all-time
favorite book?
Charlotte’s Web
by E.B. White. This
children’s classic is
a gentle story about
the universal themes
of friendship, love,
and life itself.
Although the book
was written many
years ago, the
timeless message
of being kind to our
friends and loved
ones still resonates
soundly today.
Debbie Centi, Youth Services
Librarian at Folsom Public
Library, 411 Stafford Street,
Folsom, 916-461-6130, library.
folsom.ca.us
Which author do you consider
a must-read?
Kids at the library are
enjoying anything by Rick
Riordan, author of the
popular Percy Jackson series.
His adventure stories feature
mythology from different
cultures and countries.
What book would you recommend for summer
reading?
The 2021 John Newbery Medal winner When You
Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller would be a great read for
summer. When Lily, her sister Sam, and their mother
move in with her sick grandmother, Lily traps a
tiger and makes a deal with him to heal her. Magical
elements and a diverse cast of characters make this
book a winner.

What’s your all-time favorite book?
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is
timeless. Even though it was released in 1960, it still
addresses issues that are relevant today, such as
race relations, single parenthood, mental illness, and
the justice system.
Which author do you consider a must-read?
I love Tana French’s writing! She’s so adept at
the psychological thriller while also creating vivid
characters that stick with you long after you’ve
finished her books.
What book would you
recommend for summer
reading?
The Phonebooth at the Edge
of the World by Laura Imai
Messina is a story about loss
and grief, yet it never feels
overly “heavy.” It’s full of hope,
love, and new beginnings, which are all
things we desperately need right now.
Stacy Gould, Owner of Ruby’s Books, 724 Sutter Street,
Folsom, 916-790-8760, rubysfolsom.com
What’s your all-time favorite book?
Becoming by Michelle Obama. Our former first
lady’s candid and humble story is beautifully
written with her true emotions coming through
in every anecdote. It’s uplifting, telling, and often
laugh-out-loud funny.
Which author do you consider a must-read?
An author that I try to push on nearly everyone is
Fredrik Backman. The Swedish novelist’s stories
are character-driven and amazingly relatable.
The way he weaves his stories
allows you to take them as light
reading or dig a little deeper
to think about relationships
and human nature. I especially
recommend A Man Called Ove
and Anxious People.
What book would you
recommend for summer reading?
No matter what your summer
plans are, make sure you take
some time to read The Bad
Muslim Discount. Sacramento
author, Syed Masood, is
hilarious! His story of several
Muslims growing up throughout the
world and then immigrating to San
Francisco touches on faith, family,
and assimilation. Masood’s deep
insights are masked in a hard-toput-down
story that’ll make you
feel all the feels!

What’s your all-time favorite book?
Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens. I love the mystery of it all
and how circumstances and people
aren’t always what they seem. It truly
transports you into the story as you
go on the journey with Pip, the young
orphan, as he works to achieve the
“great expectations” he’s set for
himself. You won’t
feel the same about
any of the characters
by the end.
What author do you
consider a mustread?
Jane Austin! Who
doesn’t love a romantic, feel-good story?
What book would you recommend for summer reading?
The Honeymooner by Melanie Summers. It’s a light, fun, non-stressful
read about a woman who gets dumped on her wedding day but goes on
the honeymoon anyway.

Librarian at Roseville Public Library, 225 Taylor
Street, Roseville, 916-774-5221, roseville.

What’s your all-time favorite book?
I keep returning to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s
The Great Gatsby, despite some terribly
problematic language and representation in
the book. I’ve enjoyed revisiting Gatsby from
a social-historical perspective through books
like So We Read On by Maureen Corrigan and
Careless People by Sarah Churchwell. This
year, the book entered the public domain, and
I’m very excited to read some of the modern
retellings of the story, especially The Chosen
and Beautiful by Nghi Vo, which reimagines the
character of Jordan Baker as queer, Asian, and
able to use magic! I’m very intrigued.
What author do you consider a must-read?
For me, Donna Tartt is a must-read author. She only
publishes a novel every 10 years or so and, in my opinion,
they’re always worth the wait.
What book would you recommend for summer reading?
I enjoyed The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance
Sayers. Its spooky and mysterious but also light and
fun to read, which is what most people seem to want
in a summer read. However, I’m planning to binge on a
series of Scandinavian crime novels—Helen Tursten’s
Detective Inspector Huss—this summer. Tursten was
recommended to me as a “female Jo Nesbo,” so I’m
anticipating some first-class grit and gore in them.

Drink Up
The Importance of H2O
BY KOURTNEY JASON
We’re all bodies of water. In fact, “up to 60% of the
human body is water,” says Donna Webb, instructor,
personal trainer, and nutrition consultant at THE
STUDIO Martial Arts & Fitness. “Therefore, it’s
important to stay hydrated, as it affects every vital
organ in your body and can lead to fatigue, diminished
brain function, and the inability for the body to
properly detox.” Along with Webb, we asked local
experts to share the 411 on H20.
TROUBLED WATERS: WHY WATER IS SO VITAL
“Our blood is made up of more than 90% water.
Water acts as a medium for oxygen and nutrients to
dissolve in. Water gives blood its ability to flow.”
—Pamela Connor, Functional Nutritionist, Connor
Wellness Clinic, connorwellnessclinic.com
“Drinking water is so vital because staying
hydrated is what allows us to have optimal body
function. It can help with weight loss and ease
of bowel movements.”—Audrey Rose Lewkowitz,
PA-C, Marshall Family Medicine, marshallmedical.
org/locations/family-medicine-el-dorado-hills
“I wouldn’t recommend [drinking] just water
because you could dilute your concentration of
electrolytes. I [recommend adding] some sort of
electrolyte to it, like a Nuun tablet or salt.”—Mark
Cavallaro, Head Trainer & Nutritionist, Roseville
Health & Wellness Center, rosevillehwc.com
GLASS HALF FULL: HOW MUCH WATER IN 24
HOURS?
“In general, you should try to drink .5-1 ounce of
water per pound of body weight. For example,

Easy Ways
to Drink
More Water
•Have a large
reusable
bottle full of
water ready to
take with you
wherever you go.
•Eat water-rich
foods, including
cucumbers
(they’re high
in enzymecharged
water, B
vitamins, nutrients,
and electrolytes) or sip
coconut water.
•Try healthy water
alternatives
like kombucha,
coffee, tea, etc.
Just limit the
amount of caffeine
you consume each
day since it acts as a
diuretic.
•Download a
hydration app
to remind you
to drink water on
a regular basis; or
fill up the number of
water bottles you need
to drink in a day and sip
from those bottles.
•For people who
have a hard time
drinking plain
water, try adding
zero-calorie
water flavorings
or a squeeze of fresh
citrus; you can also
freeze raspberries or
blueberries in ice cube
trays to add flavor
and chill your water
throughout the day.
if you weigh 150 pounds, you want to drink
between 75-150 ounces of water.”
—Donna Webb
“I recommend all adults consume at least
64 ounces, or two liters, of water daily. If
you’re exercising or want to drink water
to lose weight, increase it to 100 ounces or
approximately three liters daily.”—Audrey Rose
Lewkowitz
TIMING IS EVERYTHING: WHEN TO DRINK UP
“Starting your day with a big glass of water
helps to wake up your system. Staying wellhydrated
throughout the day helps your body
in the detoxing and regeneration process at
night as you sleep.”—Donna Webb
“It’s best to drink most of your water between
meals. If you drink too much water with food,
it impedes digestion.”—Pamela Connor
“If you drink large amounts at one time, your
body won’t be able to properly absorb it.”
—Mark Cavallaro
“Two hours prior to bedtime, refrain from
drinking water in excess, in order to minimize
having to use the bathroom in the middle of
the night.”—Audrey Rose Lewkowitz
HYDRATION HIGHWAY: HOW TO TELL IF
YOU’RE PROPERLY HYDRATED
“The color of your urine is the best indicator
for your hydration level. The clearer your
urine, the more hydrated you are.”
—Donna Webb
“Be aware if you take a vitamin, as it will make
your urine a bright yellow. Thirst is not a good
indicator; if you’re thirsty, it’s usually too late,
which is why consistent hydration throughout
the day is preferred.”—Mark Cavallaro
“If your stools are hard and small, this can
indicate you’re not drinking enough water
throughout the day.”—Audrey Rose Lewkowitz
“Dehydration isn’t always obvious. Some of the
signs of mild to moderate dehydration include
brain fog, fatigue, muscle weakness doing daily
activities, and decreased urine amount.”

GEOLOGY
101: HOW
WAS TAHOE
FORMED?
Despite
widespread belief
that the Tahoe
Basin came about
due to a collapsing
volcanic crater, the
third deepest lake
in North America
was actually
created by fault
dynamics. As the
two ranges around
Tahoe formed (the
Sierra Nevada
to the west and
Carson Range to
the east) a valley
was established.
Meanwhile, lava
flow initiated a
dam to the north
of present-day
Lake Tahoe, where
a lake formed and
eventually carved
a new path: the
present-day path
of the Lower
Truckee River.
With the onset of
the Ice Age, giant
glaciers flowed
down the valleys,
forming large,
U-shaped valleys,
bare, jagged peaks,
steep hillsides
of gravel and
rock (known as
moraines), and
pristine lakes
that characterize
Desolation
Wilderness.

BY EMILY PETER-COREY
Q: What are some early
warning signs of hearing
loss?
A: Hearing loss can be insidious, slow,
and progressive; therefore, it oftentimes
goes unnoticed. Here are some early
signs to watch for.
• Difficulty hearing others in
background noise.
• Difficulty hearing children’s and
women’s voices.
• Asking others to repeat what they’re
saying.
• Turning up the television louder than
others prefer.
• Difficulty hearing on the telephone.
• Putting the cell phone on speaker
becomes easier to hear than listening
with it on the ear.
• Asking others to speak clearly.
• Noticing that it’s difficult to hear others
when they speak fast.
• Sounds are muffled and dull.

GRILL MASTER’S GALLEY
For the wearer of the “Kiss the Cook”
apron comes the first outdoor style. With
a focus on the backyard as an extension
of the indoor kitchen and dining room,
this style uses similar surfaces to those
you would find in a restaurant or your
own personal kitchen. Easy-to-clean
countertops, stainless steel grills and
cooking appliances, and plenty of
storage are key factors to consider when
recreating this look. Whether you’re
having a romantic dinner outdoors
or hosting a birthday party complete
with burgers and hot dogs, you’ll need
plenty of room to move throughout
your kitchen space. Another must-have?
An outdoor rug. Not only will it anchor
your exterior kitchen, but they’re easy
to clean, low-maintenance, and can
take the traffic of a hundred little feet, a
few pets, or a casual evening outdoors.

SOCIALITE’S SUN PERCH
After a long week of working indoors—
staring out at the beautiful weather—
nothing feels more “right” than hosting
an alfresco soirée. Besides some bubbles,
bites, and best friends, you’ll need a
space that sets the mood and helps the
party end on a high note. To achieve this
look, choose a citrusy color like orange
or yellow to make your exterior space
pop and help your guests feel more
energized. Next, opt for a dining table that
comfortably seats at least six people but
is adjustable as needed should your quiet
dinner party turn into a more intimate
gathering. Next, choose outdoor furniture
that complements your bright color
palette and dining table—maybe a few
lounge chairs or a fire pit. Lastly, gather
party-proof accessories, like shatterproof
glasses and plates and outdoor light
fixtures that are both fashionable and
functional.
RELAXER’S RETREAT
Nothing screams "calm" quite like lazing
in the sun. Taking a catnap on a lounge
chair or sunbathing near the pool is a
perfect way to while away a summer day,
and we highly recommend it. To achieve
a relaxing outdoor retreat, you’ll need
a few things. First, choose furniture in
plush but functional fabrics and neutral
colors and patterns. Next, add an outdoor
fireplace, chimney, or fire pit to create
coziness and keep guests warm after the
sun dips down. Lastly, pile on textured
textiles and linens, so you can snuggle
up with a good book during the day.
Whether you’re looking to hit the snooze
button in the sun or invite a few people
over to hang in your outdoor space,
you’ll be all set with the above ideas for a
relaxer’s retreat.
Which outdoor personality are you? A
griller in need of a galley? A sun-bathing
socialite? Or someone in dire need of
a relaxing retreat? Whether one or all
three, these outdoor styles are some of
our favorite ways to enjoy the sun-filled
months ahead.

Perfect
CHILL OUT:
Scoops
Sweeten your summer with this
roundup of the best ice cream
treats in town.
Sweet Dozen Cones offers a seriously
sweet spin on ice cream treats. Their chimney
cones—also known as kürtőskalács in
Hungarian—are unique, hollow, bread-like
pastries. They have a satisfying crunch on the
outside and light, fluffy texture on the inside,
providing the perfect vessel for ice cream.
Select from a variety of flavored cones,
half a dozen cream fillings, and soft serve
gelato. One (of many!) fan favorite is the
Nutty Professor (cinnamon sugar cone with
peanut butter, walnuts, and chocolate gelato,
topped with granola, Oreo crumbs, and a
Nutter Butter). Their over-the-top offerings
prove you can never have too much of a good
thing. 807 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-358-9814,
foodiecones.com
Cià di Gelateria brings authentic Italian
gelato to Folsom with fresh, local ingredients
and raw ingredients imported from Italy.
If that’s not authentic, what is? There are
no artificial sweeteners or colors in their
gelato and very little cream, but fret not:
slow churning achieves a dense, creamy
texture. While they offer their gelatos in all
their naked goodness (hazelnut, midnight
chocolate, salted caramel, etc.), they also
make cute-as-a-button gelato popsicles
(chocolate-covered peanut butter, pralinecoated
fior di latte, graham-sprinkled
cappuccino, etc.) and serve an especially
exquisite affogato that comes with the
gelato of your choice (we recommend the
stracciatella featuring sweet cream with
shavings of chocolate) topped with two
shots of espresso. It’s the ultimate Italian
indulgence. 2784 East Bidwell Street, Suite 100,
Folsom, 916-817-1430, ciagelato.com
What’s better than chocolate? Chocolate
and ice cream, of course! And Snooks
Chocolate Factory in Folsom delivers
both. Whether you’re craving melt-in-yourmouth
morsels of luxurious chocolate or cool
spheres of smooth, silky ice cream, Snooks
has treats that’ll satisfy the entire family. In
addition to fabulous fruit freezes, they carry
Gunther’s Ice Cream (a Sacramento institution
since 1940) in a rainbow of flavors—favorites
include taro, birthday cake, and mint
chip. Ask for all three piled high onto one of
Snooks’ hand-made, chocolate-dipped waffle
cones. 731 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-985-0620,

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream lays claim to the
title of “best ice cream in the world”—something you’ll have
to verify on your trip(s) there this summer. Their homemade
ice cream is crafted using methods and recipes that have a
history of over 75 years. And they don’t skimp on the good
stuff. Fistfuls of nuts, creamy caramel, deep dark chocolate,
fresh fruits, and fluffy marshmallows are blended into each
batch, promising a cornucopia of ice cream adventures
whenever you visit. Buckeye, black raspberry truffle,
pistachio, French silk pie, birthday cake…they’re all
fantastic. Try them in a four-scoop sampler, waffle bowl, or
sugar cone. They even have cute little ice cream pops and
sandwiches for additional frozen fun. 1011 East Bidwell, Suite
123, Folsom, 916-597-2947; 1164 Galleria Boulevard, Suite 100,
Roseville, 916-755-4256, handelsicecream.com
The Parlor Ice Cream Puffs takes creative
ice cream flavors and puts them in freshly baked
donuts. Order a “Puff” and you’ll be asked to pick
a glazed or non-glazed donut, select a flavor (or
flavors!) of ice cream, plus as many toppings as
you want (Fruity Pebbles, gummy bears, potato
chips, almonds, toffee bits, coconut, honey, etc.).
Wake up with ice cream in the form of tea (matcha,
Thai, and Earl Grey) and coffee (with swirls of
Nutella) or celebrate an occasion with strawberry
shortcake (“Shorty Got Cakes”) or red velvet with
Oreo, cookie dough, and chocolate chip (“Elmo’s
Revenge”). And if you don’t dig donuts, get your ice
cream in the form of a milkshake or with churros
(cinnamon, Nutella Oreo, or Fruity Pebbles flavored).
Talk about a sugar high! 1490 Eureka Road, Suite 170,
Roseville, 916-781-7833; 2620 Fair Oaks Boulevard,
Sacramento, 916-977-3997, theparloricecream.com
T-Crepes typically tempts with treats like boba tea
and Japanese-style crêpes, but there’s also ice cream
to be found here—tucked into specialty bubble waffle
wraps. Sweet, chewy, hot, cold—you’re assured of
all the makings of a delectable dessert within these
sweet packages. Take for instance, their Matcha
that pairs green tea ice cream with Fruity Pebbles,
chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, mini marshmallows,
and Pocky. Or their Oreo Funky Town with vanilla
ice cream, Oreo, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate syrup,
powdered sugar, and Pocky. Get in the summer spirit
and try one of each! 1870 Prairie City, Suite 300, Folsom,
916-597-2787, facebook.com/tcrepes
T. W. Bonkers Toy & Candy Emporium is a
magical place in more ways than one. They’ve recently
added ice cream to their vast and wonderous selection
of candy, chocolate, games, and toys, and are extending
their hours this summer. Can you imagine a more
perfect place to be? They’re starting out with 12 flavors
of Gunther’s Ice Cream with plans to offer more. Served
in sugar or cake cones, they also offer to-go options.
Current flavors include marble fudge, bubblegum,
pecan praline, strawberry, toasted almond, and rainbow
sherbet. Let Tony know what you love and want more
of and he’ll make it happen—magically! 398 Main Street,

No pool? No problem!
Take advantage of our
region’s lakes and rivers
by going for a sunset
paddle-boarding session,
wakeboarding adventure,
or heading to a pictureperfect
beach for a picnic
and quick dip.
Starting in the Sierra
Nevada Mountains and with
three distinct forks, the
American River provides
plenty of swimming spots,
like Clarks Hole (also called
Clarks Pool) on the North
Fork. Walk the Clarks Hole
Trail, enjoy the waterfall
along the way, and spend
the day soaking in the
swimming hole. Those with
an even bigger appetite
for adventure can get
splashed by the river’s
rapids on a whitewater
rafting expedition. There
are dozens of commercial
outfitters listed on
theamericanriver.com/
recreation/whitewaterrafting,
but we recommend
booking with OARS (an
international company with
headquarters in the Sierra
Foothills).
Lake Natoma is the
area’s go-to kayaking,
stand-up paddling, and
sailing spot, thanks to
its 5-mph speed limit.

7 Water
Safety Tips
According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, about 10 people
die from unintentional drowning—every
day. Play it safe this season by following
these tips.
Enroll in swim lessons.
1 The earlier a
child starts swim
lessons, the better,
as they’ll achieve
developmental,
physical, and social
benefits, and gain
skills ensuring a lifetime
of safe, fun swimming.
Children should ultimately learn
2 to swim without goggles and be
comfortable opening eyes underwater. As
kids become dependent on wearing goggles,
they lose the ability to swim if their goggles
fall off or fill with water. If a child happens to
fall into a pool without goggles, it’s critical
they’re comfortable opening their eyes, so
they can locate the nearest step or wall and
swim to safety.
Limit the use of flotation devices.
3 These devices create a false sense
of security and cause children to become
dependent on swimming with them. If a
child falls or jumps in a pool, it’s important
they know how to float and/or put their face
in the water, without the aid of a flotation
device, and swim to the side of the pool.
With that said: Always make sure your
kids wear life jackets on boats, personal
watercraft, and in open bodies of water.
Follow a “getting ready to swim”
4 routine before swimming. Just like a
morning routine, if a child follows a “getting
ready to swim” routine, such as going to the
bathroom, putting on a swim diaper and
suit, and applying sunscreen, it helps deter
them from jumping into a pool on a whim.
Keep children under constant
5 supervision. No matter how advanced
you think your child is at swimming, they
must always be supervised when in or
around the water.
Know CPR. CPR is a procedure that
6 everyone should know how to do. You
never know when administering CPR could
help to save a life.
Install pool fences or other barriers.
7 If you have a pool, installing fences
or other barriers around the pool is highly
recommended, especially if there are
children near the area.

Youtube: Adrian Graphics & Marketing
Founder of Adrian Graphics & Marketing, Adrian
Boysel, didn’t come from wealth or privilege. His story
will help many struggling entrepreneurs to achieve
their own dreams.
Adrian’s childhood was less than ideal. Adrian recalls
being told he would never amount to anything but his
passion for making a difference couldn’t be dampened.
His career in design began in a retail design studio.
Adrian experienced the satisfaction of using design
to bring people and products/services together in a
meaningful and mutually beneficial way.
In 2011 he launched Adrian Graphics & Marketing.
His success set the stage for a new career aimed at
helping others achieve similar success. But he still felt
something was missing.
It was on a visit to Spain where he reconnected with
his heritage that a lightbulb went on! Adrian recounts
the moment, “with the knowledge that I have who can
I impact and help most in the world?"
That was the moment when Adrian realized his path
- helping ‘at risk’ youth who were also told that they
would never achieve anything significant.
Shortly after this he launched Instagraphics, a creative
and collaborative network aimed at helping graphic
designers thrive in both their personal and professional
lives.
Instagraphics leads by example with unwavering
integrity, old-fashioned hard work, loyalty,
perseverance in the face of adversity, humbleness and
kindness.
The network, found at https://instagraphics.com/ is
the cornerstone of the brand, supported foundationally
by https://instagraphicsacademy.com/, featuring
courses, guides and programs that empower students
to increase their income and improve their skillsets.
Adrian has shared the stage with entrepreneurs
and motivational speakers including Tom Bilyeu,
Jeff Hoffman, Alec Stern and Brian Tracy. With his
experience Adrian offers his top advice to those
seeking out an entrepreneurial path:
1. Success Comes from within
2. Be Proud of What you Stand For
3. Success is Mindset of Abundance – A little positivity
goes a long way.
4. Be Open-minded and resilient
5. Be a Lifelong Learner

The Queen
City
Discover Cincinnati
BY TERRY CARROLL
21c Museum Hotel
It’s early April, and my wife, Wendy, and I are thinking about doing
something fun for our 20th wedding anniversary. Hawaii seems like a
good choice, but the Covid travel restrictions are a bit onerous. How
about Santa Monica—the place where a lot of our courtship took
place, and a piece of the world we love? “No, I’ve got it! Let’s go to
Ohio—Cincinnati to be exact!” Wendy turns, looks at me, and with a
big smile says: “Yes! That's perfect.”
Wendy Sipple and Terry Carroll celebrating
their 20th wedding anniversary at Metropole
Though we’ve been fortunate to visit
many places throughout the world, there’s
always something new and interesting to be
found in the thousands of cities and towns
here in the U.S.—and in this new (almost)
post-COVID time, it's a great time to explore
them.
First up, we checked out Cincinnati's
Tourism Bureau, which lead us to
The Cincinnati Experience
(cincinnatiexperience.com), where we
found a ton of ideas on must sees and
dos, where to eat and where to stay, along
with a plethora of helpful information
and history about the city.
Getting to Cincinnati proved to be
effortless, even with the airlines’ reduced
schedules making travel more difficult. Both
21c Museum Hotel
Southwest and United offered good options.
Of course, choosing the right hotel to stay
at was the most important choice. We were
looking for something comfortable, centrally
located, and more “boutique” than business.
After some research, we zeroed in on a hotel
that checked all the boxes: 21c Museum
Hotel Cincinnati (21cmuseumhotels.
com/cincinnati). Situated in the heart of the
city, this boutique hotel is a multi-venue
contemporary art museum, has an awardwinning
restaurant and is an easy walk to
almost anywhere, including a tram stop
around the corner. Speaking of the city’s
streetcar (the “Cincinnati Bell Connector”),
it takes you through most of downtown in
around 20 minutes, is comfortable, and free.
After an easy check-in and quick look
around the hotel’s exquisite art collection, we

were off to the Great American
Ball Park (mlb.com/reds/ballpark)
to see the Reds host the Pirates:
our first in-person ballgame in
almost two years! Watching the Reds—baseball’s first professional
franchise— win 14-1 from great seats in a beautiful park made for an
ideal introduction to the city.
Walking back to the hotel, we stopped at a trendy Mexican/South
American cantina called Nada (eatdrinknada.com) for some small
bites and a glass of wine. There’s something about outdoor café dining
in a small “big” city (a little smaller than Sacramento) that I’ve always
loved, and this fit the bill perfectly.
Day two meant a visit to one of the main attractions on our
agenda: the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden (cincinnatizoo.
org). This wonderful zoo—the second oldest in the U.S.—is consistently
voted as one of the best in the nation and houses more than 500
animals and 3,000 plant species. It holds a special place in many
people’s hearts, because of the January 2017 premature birth of Fiona
the hippo who became an Internet sensation. At 29 pounds, Fiona
was born at less than half the size of a normal baby hippo, and that’s
where the story begins with the staff going to extreme measures—
along with the zoo team, local hospitals, NICU nurses, and all kinds of
specialists—to keep this little girl alive. Fiona is now four-and-a-half
and close to 2,000 pounds. She and her mom, Bibi, are one of the zoo’s
highlights. Plan on spending the day here, because, along with the
hippos, there are giraffes (which you can feed!) gorillas, lions, rhinos
(another baby!), cheetahs, manatees, and and so more.
After, it was back to the hotel where we were given a private tour
of their art exhibition by the Museum Manager (and artist in his own
right) Michael Hurst—one of the many things that makes this property,
and all the hotel’s other locations, so special. The founders of 21c, Laura
Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, are contemporary art collectors and
preservationists, specifically 21st century art (hence the hotel's name).
Hurst guided us through the current exhibition, Dress Up, Speak
Up (21cmuseumhotels.com/cincinnati/blog/2020/take-a-virtualtour)
which takes up the first two floors of the hotel. This specially
21c Museum Hotel
comissioned curated collection features works from renowned artists
such as Fahamu Pecou, Jody Paulsen, Firelei Báez, Carlos Gamez de
Francisco and many others, and is a marvel to behold. One of the
unique features of the hotel is not only their rotating exhibitions, but
art is everywhere within the hotel; the walls of the elevator, the landing
on every floor, pieces in every guest room—including the bathroom
which featured custom body-part (think nose, lips) tiles by Cincinnatibased
Rookwood Pottery Company—even the lobby desk is a work
of art. You could spend your entire trip just gazing at this massive
collection throughout the property. Even cooler is one of the missions
behind the hotel: “the belief that art can be a vital part of daily life and
a spark to ignite new energy and ideas.” To that end, the museum’s
exhibition is open 24/7/365 and free to the public (though during
COVID, reservations are required, and times are limited).
That evening we dined at the hotel restaurant: Metropole
(metropoleonwalnut.com). This is a hotel restaurant whose design
would be fitting in any great city—from NYC to London or Berlin. It’s
open and airy with the kitchen and staff in full view. After ordering
our usual glasses of pinot noir, our knowledgable and convivial server,
Jeremy, brought us a taste of a South African red blend: Lubanzi.
He said if we were predisposed to pinot, we might find this wine
interesting. He nailed it, and we ordered a bottle. We had the Crispy
Deviled Eggs to start that were deliciously indulgent. Then something

on the menu caught my
eye: Jam and Cheese Toast
featuring grilled sourdough
with fresh blueberry jam and Gouda cheese. We
ordered it...but here is where I made a mistake:
I offered my wife a bite. The fight was on,
and I think I got half, but with forks and
knives moving fast and raised and pointed
in perilous ways, I can’t be sure. This was
one of those dishes I will be making till the
day I die—though it’ll never be as good as
Executive Chef Vanessa Miller’s rendition. Dinner
was Tagliatelle Carbonara (for me) and Tomato
and Saffron Risotto (for Wendy). Both were full of
flavor, cooked to perfection, and served impeccably.
Of course, we had no room for dessert, but Jeremy
said we couldn’t leave before trying the Citrus Olive
Oil Cake, and yet again, he nailed it. We left with full
bellies to be sure.
The next day took us to an area named more
than 150 years ago by those who had immigrated
to the region from Europe, a great many of them
German and developed the area. Many of these
immigrants walked to work crossing bridges over a
now-filled in canal they nicknamed “the Rhine” and
was subsequently dubbed “Over-the-Rhine” (OTR).
The OTR is one of the largest, most intact urban
historic districts and reminded me of a neighborhood found in many cities
throughout our country—hip, urban, and amid a renewal with cafés, eateries,
bars, and boutiques, along with craft breweries, peppering the area.
Our first tour of the day was enlightening, to say the least. Craig Maness of
American Legacy Tours (americanlegacytours.com) met us in the OTR and
started us on a two-hour private Queen City Underground Tour. Jam-packed
with great stories and historical data, we journeyed through Washington Park;
Findlay Market
into the bowels of St. Francis Seraph
Church where headstones and remains
of 41 early Cincinnati citizens can be
found in their crypt; and through the
recently rediscovered and excavated
chilly underground tunnels of the
defunct Kauffmann Brewery to see
where beer was made
by countless brewers
before and during
prohibition in the ’20s
and ’30s. While they
haven’t produced for
decades, the smell of
hops and yeast still
hung in the air. It’s
always nice to be with
a guide who loves
what they do, has
endless knowledge
about local history
and Maness personified this.
Craig then handed us off to Barbara
Cooper, from Cincinnati Food Tours
(cincinnatifoodtours.com), who gave
us the lowdown on Findlay Market
Churchill's Fine Teas
(findlaymarket.org), a wonderful area that
combines a continuously-operating market
dating back to 1855 and surrounding area that
features shops of all kinds including pop-up retail
buildings on the perimeter where Cincinnatians
come to shop for produce, meats, desserts,
specialty items, and more.
First up, we stopped The Arepa Place
(arepaplace.com)—a small eatery specializing in
Colombian and Venezuelan dishes—started by
Isis Arrieta-Dennis and her mother (also Isis) as a
pop-up and so successful that they were able to
move to a shop on the market perimeter. We were
served the namesake arepa, which is a dough
made from boiled and ground corn that’s grilled
then filled with your choice of mozzarella cheese,
black beans, fried plantains, shredded beef,
chorizo, and/or chicken. This was our first arepa
but not our last—muy sobroso!
Next up was Churchill’s Fine Teas
(churchillsteas.com), which looked and felt like
something you would find on a side street in
London’s Notting Hill. We were treated to tea and

Just a couple of doors down, we
came to Dean’s Mediterranean

market, and rare spice shop where
you can buy as little or as much as
you want and need. This place oozed
history, with old-world spices filling the air
and selections of cooking items that would
appeal to the best chefs in the world. Tip: try their falafel wrap.
Around the corner we came upon another staple business of the
market, Eckerlin Meats (eckerlinmeats.com), founded in 1852 and now
managed by Josh Lillis, a sixth generation family member. Impressed by
the overall selection, we enjoyed their specialty product called goetta—a
mixture of pork, beef, oatmeal, onions, and spices, formed into a loaf,
and cooked slowly. It s been a part of Cincinnati cuisine since the first
German immigrants arrived. Sweet, smoky, and served fried, I think it
would settle in next to eggs over easy and hash browns quite well.
Next up, Taste of Belgium (authenticwaffle.com)—Cincinnati’s
favorite waffle shop started by Jean-François Flechet in 2007. Though
pretty full at this point, after listening to team member Michael Polk
explain the company's philosophy, and watching him prepare the
original waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream for us,
how could we possibly resist? Yeah, we devoured the delicious treat in a
matter of seconds—we couldn’t help ourselves! We left Barbara and the
market, thanking her for a delightful tour that really opened our eyes to
the city, its culture, history, and culinary treats.
Our last day started with some spa therapy at The Spa at 21c,
which was exactly what we needed. After two days of walking practically
non-stop, our bodies were ready for some pampering. I opted for a facial
and Wendy opted for a massage, which she described as “one of the
best massages I’ve ever had!” While we were then thoroughly relaxed
and wanted to go back to our room for a nap, we hunkered down and
continued to explore, heading first for a quick bite at Wahlburgers
(wahlburgers.com) and a little shopping at the storied hat shop adjacent
to the hotel, Batsakes, which opened in 1907 and offers off-the-rack or
custom-made caps. At this point, we couldn’t walk another step, so we
took advantage of the free Cincinnati Bell Connector streetcar taking the
3.6-mile round trip journey through The Banks, downtown and Overthe-Rhine.
As we packed our bags to head home, I couldn’t help but think what
a terrific time we had in Cincinnati—our only regret is that we couldn’t
stay longer and enjoy even more of this grand city’s delights. Cincinnati
is picturesque and steeped in rich history, but the real takeaway was the
people—some of the nicest I’ve encountered in all my travels around the
world. I asked Wendy if she would want to come back, and her answer
put our entire trip into perspective. “Come back? Heck, I’d move here!” I
couldn’t have said it any better myself.

Dining Out
BF Miyabi
BY LORN RANDALL // PHOTOS BY DANTE FONTANA
Ithink my editors must cringe when
they assign me to a sushi restaurant—
they know I’m going to “roll” right
through my budgetary stop sign.
Fortunately, they’re great people, and
I try not to abuse them too severely.
But when I saw the options and quality at BF
Miyabi, I sensed there might have to be some
negotiating later.
My server was diligent in pointing out that
it was happy hour, and I would be remiss if I
didn’t order a sake oyster shooter. I hate being
remiss, so I accepted her offer, and then later,
I ordered a scallop shooter…so much for
being remiss.
I ordered hamachi carpaccio
from the small plates menu, to
start. Chefs Bryan Hoong
and Frank Zhu (the
B&F in BF Miyabi)
hit a home run
Sake Toro Nigiri
with this dish, and
not just the beautiful
presentation and skilled
knife work complementing
the delicate buttery flavor of the
yellowtail. The surprise wasn’t the slight
heat from razor-thin jalapeño nor the
citrusy ponzu and briney tobiko, either: It
was the faint whisper of truffle oil that united
land and sea.
Next, a wonderfully subtle offering of
raw salmon belly from the chef: sake toro
nigiri. Lightly dressed in their house-made
marinade and just kissed by a torch, this dish
exemplified the difference between fresh
and commercially frozen salmon.
For the main course, Chef Bryan
presented me with the deluxe sushi combo,
which, on my visit, included torched red
snapper, anago-saltwater eel, sake toro, ebi
(shrimp), hamachi toro, and a spider roll
(soft-shell crab with avocado, cucumber, and
tobiko). The items came presented bento
box-style—each in its own cubicle. Once
again, the fish was the star of the show—not
over-sauced or doused in over-the-top
condiments, which is often the case with
sushi—just great product and clean,
simple presentation…a winner in my
book.
I also took the liberty of
having deep-fried ice cream
for dessert; what the
heck, I avoided all the
carbs from the
sushi rice (at
least that’s
what
I’m reporting).
I’ve never had
DFIC from a sushi
restaurant, so I was
curious. It’s different from
the type you might find in
many restaurants whereby they
roll ice cream in bits of precooked,
crumbled, fry coating. In this preparation,
the ice cream was rolled in sliced pound cake,
refrozen, then dipped in tempura batter and
deep-fried. Delicious!
My social media foodie friends have unofficially
ranked BF Miyabi as one of the top five sushi
restaurants in the area, and I tend to agree. Please
stop in and see for yourself!

Wing Mahal // Once, while working as an erstwhile bartender and cook in my hometown, I heard
my mentor admonish a customer for licking their fingers while eating. That bit of mannering stuck with me
most of my life—until experiencing Wing Mahal in Folsom. That life credo went flying out the restaurant
window, as I devoured a plate of their incredibly flavorful Butter Chicken Wings and Tikka Masala
Wings. Yes, you read that right. Wing Mahal crossbred an American staple with the flavors of India, and
it works—so well, in fact, that I was startled by the ease in which I ignored all forethought of manners and,
yes, licked…a lot. The sauces are made in-house by the owners, and there are 13 to choose from—listed
on a “heat scale”—including all the traditional fan favorites like garlic parmesan, lemon pepper, BBQ,
and buffalo hot; plus others for extreme heat-seekers, like mango habenero, dry-rubbed Mumbai spice,
and Punjabi BBQ, which are at the top of the “I’m-gonna-need-milk” scale. They also serve

Where We Live
Local resident Chris Maehr takes advantage of a balmy
summer evening on Folsom Lake. He coined the term
"Wake Surf Wednesday" where all his friends are invited to
join him for an after-work sunset cruise.
DID YOU
KNOW?
FUN FOLSOM
LAKE FACTS
Two major
campgrounds are
located on the
lake: Peninsula
Campground (more
remote; accessible
by boat or via
Rattlesnake Bar Road
from Pilot Hill) and
Beal's Point (adjacent
to a beach, snack bar,
and other amenities).
Go fish! Largemouth,
smallmouth, and
spotted bass can all
be caught at Folsom
Lake, in addition
to rainbow trout,
kokanee salmon,
crappie, bluegill, and
catfish.
Folsom Lake—which
has a surface area of
11,500 acres, elevation
of 466 feet, and 75
miles of undulated
shoreline—is the
ninth largest reservoir
in California.
The lake was a
significant mining site
during the California
Gold Rush of 1849.
At its heyday in 1853,
“Mormon Island”—an
approximately 300-
feet sandbar where
gold was found by
members of the
Mormon Battalion—
had a population of
2,500, in addition
to multiple motels,
saloons, and a school.
